Island has a place at international event on protecting fisheries

Bermuda is to be represented at an international marine science conference on protecting fisheries.Tammy Trott, of the Department of Environmental Protection, will attend this week’s five-day gathering in Miami.Bermuda’s initiative to protect the Sargasso Sea will be presented before ICCAT, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.Dr Trott said: “My attendance at this meeting will undoubtedly allow me to provide the Bermuda Government with the most up-to-date information on these various management approaches some of which we may be able to apply locally, here in Bermuda.“I will also have the opportunity to network with fisheries scientists from all over the world which is invaluable in securing both our global recognition and our connection to the international community.”Her travel expenses are being paid by the Sargasso Sea Alliance, the Bermuda-led scientific partnership to secure protected status for the Sargasso.A group from ICCAT’s Standing Committee on Research and Statistics convenes from May 9 to May 13 at the University of Miami.Useful web link: www.iccat.es
