One trial enough for Somerset
Somerset Cup Match skipper Jacobi Robinson is confident the West Enders can claw back the prestigious trophy his side relinquished in 2005 in St. George's – although they have yet to have a trial match to decide the players who they will pick.
Domestic and international fixtures have come thick and fast over the past month, leaving available days for trial matches few and far between with many of the potential players being heavily involved in both facets of the game.
Somerset will hold their one and only trial match this Saturday before they select a squad to reclaim the title.
"We're only having one trial due to the league schedule and all the international cricket being played so far this summer," said Robinson, who lives a stone's throw away from Somerset Cricket Club (SCC).
"This won't bother our preparations, however, as a lot of guys are playing in the national team or have leading roles in their teams, so it doesn't matter how many trials we have.
"Some of the trials have no meaning so this one this weekend will be the big one and we will see how it goes."
Among those at his disposal will be a host of veterans who missed out on last year's match, most notably Dean Stephens, who has hit fine form recently, Somerset's own Azeem Pitcher, Kwame Tucker, and potentially seamer Kevin Hurdle, who could make a long awaited return.
Also looking to get into the squad will be Jim West, who is finally reaching his potential and the ever dangerous Derrick Brangman, while youngsters Deunte Darrell and Joshua Gilbert will also be hopnig to keep their places in the squad.
"There are a lot of guys looking to get back in the team including Dean Stephens, Kwame Tucker, Azeem Pitcher, along with Jim West, Kevin Hurdle, and Derrick Brangman just to name a few," said Robinson.
"So our team this year will be competitive to say the least, and we will pick a team that will have the ability to win the Cup back over the two days."
Former national team player Robinson suspects St. George's new skipper Oronde Bascome could be a possible weak link for the defending champions and said the challengers will look to 'rattle his cage'.
Like Bascome, Robinson was also named a Cup Match skipper at a young age and believes his counterpart could struggle as St.George's do not have the same depth of experienced players they have had in the past.
"St. George's picking Oronde was maybe a decision to keep the captaincy in the club as he's from St. George's.
"If they didn't they would have probably gone with OJ (Pitcher) or Delyone (Borden), but he has the ability and he must show it now when the spotlight is on him.
"Some may argue he is a good player but not good enough to be in the squad, so we will see how he does and I wish him the best as I was once in his position.
"The minute you take the captaincy and place it on the shoulders of a youngster you don't really know what's going to happen on the day, and given the magnitude of the occasion, who will he look to when he runs out of options.
"He won't have Clay Smith, Charlie Marshall or even Lionel Cann, if he is done, so this leaves a lot of pressure on OJ and Delyone so there aren't too many options for him should things not go his way."
