Bermuda Under-19s 93-2

Vice-captain Chris Douglas produced an awesome display with the ball as Bermuda swept aside Argentina in their first match at the Under-19 Americas Regional Championships by eight wickets at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, Toronto.

The defending champions fired a warning shot to those looking to dethrone them by making quick work of their underdog opponents, bowling them out for a paltry 89 runs.

Douglas, playing on the same wicket he scored a sensational half-century on his senior debut last year against the West Indies, snatched four wickets with his spin bowling to set up the victory.

The St. David's opener finished with four wickets for a stingy four runs from 3.3 overs.

Helping Douglas was Lateef Trott, Kevon Fubler and Joshua Gilbert who all took a wicket apiece.

Opener Gonsalez Sutil was the only Argentine batsman to trouble the scoreboard, top scoring with 20 for his side.

In reply to a very reachable total, the Island reached the required target losing two wickets, including that of Douglas (15).

Opening with skipper Terryn Fray (18), the pair got the run chase off to a good start before both fell to leg before decisions.

However, the target was always reachable with Regino Smith (12) and Deunte Darrell (11) seeing the side across the finish line with plenty of overs to spare.

Coach Andre Manders was pleased with the victory but quick to point out that there are bigger and more important games to be won later in the week, including matches against rivals USA and Canada.

With a very winnable game at the front of their busy schedule and Cayman today, Manders said that there is still time to iron the small imperfections in the side's overall play out before they get into the business end of the tournament.

"It is always good to get off to a winning start," said Manders. "We can't underestimate any of these teams.

"We wanted to get out of the way because the weather was supposed to get bad this afternoon, and playing Argentina we wanted to get our result in and done with.

"We have the points in the bag and get a chance to watch the other teams play for a bit, but we done the job and can move on.

"There were a few things we can work on, we gave up a few extras and field placement but otherwise it was OK.

"We play Cayman tomorrow and take it from there because we play USA on Wednesday who have a strong team at the tournament.

"In fact they scored 300 and something against the Bahamas today so that will be an important match along with Canada, who knocked down Cayman for 82.

"It is still early in the tournament but we will be looking to get the right blend on the pitch and hopefully do well."

The side face off against Cayman Islands today, with a showdown against the much-fancied USA tomorrow.
