Island trio on board for University win
Three local sailors helped Roger Williams University triumph in the US National Championships at the weekend.Cameron Pimentel, Haley Powell and Sean Bouchard all took part in three days of racing during the APS/ICSA National Championship at the Columbia River Gorge.Their team beat 13 other top collegiate race teams to win the Walter C. Wood Memorial Trophy.Pimentel and Powell are both Bermudians while Bouchard lives on the Island when he is not attending university. All three came up through the ranks of the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association.Amanda Callahan, head coach for Roger Williams, said: “The break in the middle of the day (between the Gold Round and the Final Four) gave us a chance to get focused. ““They played the corn hole bean bag game and took their minds of the morning’s races. They knew what the job was and they went out and did it.”Roger Williams, who were making their debut appearance at the Championships, join an elite list of schools that have previously won the title including St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Boston College and Georgetown University.
