Big-hitting Barry destroys Village

Big-hitting Barbadian Barry Richards blasted 32 in an over from soccer coach Kenny Thompson to spur West Indian Association to a crushing 10-wicket Commercial Cricket League victory over North Village.

Jamaican Association, opting for the extra bounce of Shelly Bay, handed newly-crowned champions St. David's their first defeat of the season, Leg Trappers edged Watford Sports Club by 25 runs while in Sunday's other match Forties completed the double over Devonshire Stars.

At Sea Breeze Oval, where the game was reduced to 35 overs a side because of rain, WIA completed the double over North Village as Richards (79 not out) and Patrick Hamlett (45 not out) tore into the North Village bowling to reach their required target of 140 in only 18 overs.

Richards, dropped twice, was especially destructive, smashing six sixes and eight fours in his explosive innings. In one remarkable over he hit Thompson for four sixes and two fours.

Earlier Village, pipped by one wicket in the first fixture, struggled to 139 all out in 34 overs, Chris Caisey top scoring with 43 while other useful contributions came from Mike Brangman (29) and Mike Levon (20). WIA's Stan Francis took two for 27 and David Greenidge two for 25.

Jamaican Association's decision to decline the offer of playing at Lord's paid dividends as they crushed St. David's by nine wickets to avenge an earlier defeat.

St. David's _ missing five of their key players, Shea Pitcher, Jeff Pitcher, Allen Richardson, George Cannonier and James Pace _ turned up with only eight men and paid the price by being comprehensively beaten. Sent in, St. David's could muster only a paltry 70 as they failed to cope with the pace of David Gibbs, who claimed four wickets for 21 in nine overs.

Hamish McCallum top-scored with 36.

In reply, the Jamaicans strolled to victory as Presley Millwood (31 not out) and Kevin Abraham (23 not out) ensured there were no alarms as they reached their target in just 13.3 overs.

In a hugely entertaining encounter at the Royal Naval Field, Leg Trappers beat Watford in a game which was always in the balance.

After winning the toss, Trappers got off to a bad start as opener Chris Fleming was caught behind without scoring, but James Broadbent teamed up with David Hosier to put on 111 in an attacking second-wicket partnership.

Hosier, promoted to opener to test his worth as a "pinch-hitter" for the forthcoming knockout competition, made the most of his opportunity, while Broadbent returned to his best form with a series of flashing boundaries before he was caught on the boundary for 41.

Hosier continued to dominate the bowling while riding his luck _ he was dropped four times _ and it was unfortunate that partner Graham Strange ran him out for 93, having struck four sixes and eight fours.

Strange went on to hit a quickfire 38 not out as Trappers, who sportingly agreed to play at the ground for the second time this season, closed on 215 for eight. Watford's best bowler was Troy Berkeley who took three for 31 from eight overs.

In reply, Watford struggled early on as wicketkeeper Chris Fleming took three consecutive catches from opening bowler Colin Scaife (three for 37), but when David DeSilva came in to join Terry Ward the Trappers bowling wilted under a mini-onslaught.

They were particularly severe on Strange who went for 24 runs in a three-over spell. It took a spectacular catch at backward point from Justin Freisenbruch, taking a break from his normal wicketkeeping duties, to get rid of Ward for 45 and he also later caught DeSilva on the long-on boundary for 52.

Watford continued to press for victory but the wily spin of James Swan, who finished with five for 49 from 10.5 overs, proved just too much as Watford were bowled out for 190 in the 35th over. Blake West made 20.

Forties were given a big scare by Devonshire Stars' skipper Derek Smith before they completed a 41-run victory at Garrison Field.

Opener Harold Minors sent Forties on their way with a typically belligerent knock of 63, which included six sixes and four fours, while Gladwin Ingham provided solid support with an undefeated half century.

Skipper Gordon Campbell made 32 before retiring hurt and later declaring at 176 for three in 35 overs.

Smith continued his excellent form, hammering six sixes and two fours in a swashbuckling knock of 76 before he was run out. His team-mates failed to follow his lead and they were bowled out for 135 in the 29th over.

Pick of the attack were pacers David Jarrett and Brian Holdip, who returned identical figures of three for 39.

Devonshire Stars take on North Village at Shelly Bay in a rearranged match this Sunday, the only Commercial fixture.
