One Somers Night
St. George’s will bring history to life on June 30 when it stages “One Somers Night” a series of re-enactments of different historical events in the old town. This is the schedule:<$>
All re-enactments are of a 5-10 minute duration and are presented at 6.15 p.m., 6.45 p.m., 7.15 p.m., 7.45 p.m. and 8.15 p.m. unless noted otherwise.
The World Heritage Centre, Penno’s Wharf
The Town Crier will cry an official welcome at 6 p.m.
You are invited by The St. George’s Foundation to tour the newly opened Visitors Orientation Gallery/Exhibit. Sir George Somers is here - he’s reminiscing about his life in Bermuda. Have a word with him and ask him some questions about life in 1609-1610. At 6.30 pm The Bermuda School of Music violinists present a few musical selections for your enjoyment. Light refreshments are available.
Tucker House Museum, Water Street
Joseph Hayne Rainey, a free black American, is in residence cleaning up his barbershop. Join him in the kitchen garden via Barber’s Alley. He will share tales of his departure from the American South in 1860 and his extraordinary return to America where he became a Congressman in the US House of Representatives in 1870. Tour the home of Henry Tucker, President of the Governor’s Council, as well as the archaeology exhibit in the cellar. (Re-enactment duration = 8 minutes)
Town Hall, King’s Square
Hear a re-enactment of the first meeting of the newly formed St. George’s Corporation dealing with the issues facing the town at the turn of the 19th century.
Bermuda National Trust Museum at the Globe Hotel<$>, Duke of York Street
Join Mrs. Georgiana Walker, wife of the Confederate Agent Major Norman Walker, in the Globe Garden where you can hear her reminisce about her dangerous passage to Bermuda through the Northern Naval Blockade in 1863 and her time spent here throughout the American Civil War. (Re-enactment duration = 10 minutes). Tour the Rogues and Runners Exhibit in the Museum and browse through the gifts on sale in the Trustworthy Gift Shop.
Bridge House<$>, off King’s Square
Join Bridger Goodrich, Virginia Loyalist & Privateer Captain and Mrs. Goodrich (nee Elizabeth Tucker, President Henry Tucker’s cousin) as they enjoy a typical evening in the 1770’s in one of the oldest houses in the Town.
Buckingham<$>, off King’s Square
Mariner Mr. Samuel Mills Jr. lives here in this house, which was built by his father in 1750. As a Mariner, Mr. Mills spends many months at sea but he is at home this evening. The Mills family welcome you into their home.
The State House
Be enlightened by a re-enactment of part of the Masonic ritual of initiation, as performed in the State House from 1816 to the present day.
Sir George Somers’ Statue, Ordnance Island
Have a laugh at the farcical Monologue of Sir George Somers and his Dragon -set in 1609. Tim Taylor of Not the Um Um fame created the monologue. (Monologue duration = 5 minutes)
The Deliverance, Ordnance Island
Bid farewell to Sir Thomas Gates and castaway survivors of the shipwrecked Sea Venture as they depart the Isle of Devils, their home for ten months, and set sail for the colony of Jamestown in Virginia.
Bermudian Heritage Museum, at the foot of Barracks Hill
Was Sally Bassett proved Guilty or Not Guilty???
Come into the Museum and hear The Sally Bassett Story, 1730. It’s interpreted by word, music and dance. (Re-enactment duration = 10 minutes)

Note times — The Menuhin Youth Orchestra present a selection of music for your enjoyment.
St. George’s Historical Society/Mitchell House<$>, Duke of Kent Street (behind Somers Supermart)
Have a look in at a 1700’s kitchen where ladies are performing kitchen chores of yesteryear with the utensils of the day and laundering with a scrubbing board and mangle. Family portraits from The Lusher Photographic Collection taken between 1880 and 1900 are on view — see if you recognise some of the old timers! The talented Quattro Group of Menuhin Students will present musical selections for your enjoyment.
On Featherbed Alley, beside St. George’s Historical Society/Mitchell House<$>
Embedded in the side wall of Mitchell House is a cell window and a marble plaque immortalizing Rev. John Stephenson, a Methodist Missionary who was imprisoned for preaching to the black population. Stop by and hear more of his intriguing story.
St. Peter’s Church<$>
Take a musical moment here. Church organist, Mrs. Claire Spencer is the featured artist; and at 7 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. young violinists from The Bermuda School of Music will delight you.
