Senators to debate medical lab rules
standards on medical labs.
The Act -- which caused a major row over racism in medicine in the House of Assembly -- is designed to ensure any private provider of medical tests, like breast screening and blood work, has met Government-set minimum standards.
The law provides for a register of labs -- similar to an existing one for nursing homes.
And the Minister of Health and Social Services will get the power to set minimum qualifications for staff.
The Upper House will also discuss an Act drawn up to reflect the loss of Cable & Wireless' monopoly position on overseas calls.
The proposed law recognises an agreement between the new-style C&W and Government on exemption from taxes. That will cover the transfer of assets from Cable and Wireless PLC to Cable & Wireless Bermuda Ltd. and the movement out of Bermuda of profits from the sale of assets without being hit by exchange control restrictions.
Senators will also debate new Government fee regulations to allow charges of between $35 and $50 -- depending on the time of day -- to be set for executive jets clearing Customs at the new fast-track facilities at the Airport.
