Norm and co make a porno
Desperate times calls for desperate measures — so proves the latest Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society comedy ‘Skin Flick’.
Written by Canadian Norm Foster (who also stars in the play), Skin Flick tells the lovable and funny tale of four innocent people who find themselves out of work and decide to film a porn movie to earn some cash.
Although it sounds like the kind of production destined to make you blush, actress Nancy Thompson said the play is tastefully done and suitable for anyone over age 16.
“Even though it’s about working on a porn film, it’s really more PG rated and probably the closest you can get to a family friendly version,” said Ms Thompson, who plays ‘Daphne’, the wife of the protagonist.
“There’s even a point in the play when someone starts swearing and one of the characters takes on a narrator type role and apologises. From that point onwards all the swearing gets bleeped out, so it’s not offensive at all.”
Acting since she was a child, Ms Thompson said she jumped at the chance to take part in the comedy.
“I’ve performed in quite a few productions in Bermuda, but I am getting older now so there aren’t too many middle aged female roles and this was a great opportunity for me,” she said.
Lizzy Hadler plays the role of out of work actress, Jill, who decides to star in the porn film.
She said she was also excited to audition for the play and for the chance to work alongside Mr Foster and director David Nairn.
Ms Hadler said the biggest challenge will be some of the physical demands of the role, like wearing a risqué nurses costume on stage, but nonetheless she’s up for the task.
“It’s really exciting and we are all looking forward to putting it on and getting an audience in to see them laughing,” she said.
Vincent O’Reilly described his character Byron as a “realistic bloke turned reluctant porn star”.
Although he has acted and directed many classic, black comedies back home in Ireland, Mr O’Reilly said this would be his first time getting on stage in Bermuda.
He said it was “interesting” to be back in front of an audience after spending the last few years directing.
“I think everything I tell people not to do I am now doing, but it’s very exciting and nice to be able to perform instead of watching the performance. It has a completely different feel to it.
“And everybody has just been terrific and are working at a very high standard,” he said.
Mr O’Reilly considers the play to be “hilarious” and said the cast was having a lot of fun performing it, which will hopefully come across to the audience.
“I also think the characters are very relatable and it’s nice to see relatable characters be put through situations that you wouldn’t yourself have to. It’s cathartic,” he added.
