Vasco hot-shots take aim at Eagles

Vasco have a great chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Coca Cola First Division tomorrow when they take on last-placed Somerset Eagles, while second and third-placed North Village and St. George's clash at Bernard Park in the day's top encounter.

Eagles, who have conceded 10 of their 20 goals in just their last two matches, may have a tough time trying to prevent Vasco from scoring more than the six St.George's put past them a week ago.

While the margin of victory is open to conjecture few would disagree that Vasco should win the match convincingly, with Eagles now in desperate trouble after losing five matches on the trot.

Certainly, there should be plenty of action at one end of the field as the league's best attack takes on the worst defence.

Things should be more balanced at Bernard Park where the battle will be on for second place. Anything but maximum points for North Village will enable Vasco to extend their lead which presently stands at four points.

Village lost to St.George's twice at Bernard Park last season as their home record was one of the worst in the First Division. But with Clay Smith and Deam Minors both missing from the St. George's line-up, still unbeaten Village must be confident of their chances of stopping the East Enders who have been on a good run through the last month.

Vasco need just a draw to seal the first Dudley Eve spot, leaving the other three berths to be contested between three or four teams, depending on this weekend's results.

St.George's will be looking to book their first ever appearance in the holiday tournament, but realise the road will not be easy as they meet three of the top four teams in the standings in their final three matches before the Christmas break.

Fourth-placed Southampton Rangers are also eyeing a Dudley Eve place, after a good start to the season. But they cannot afford to look any further than their next opponents, Devonshire Colts, who themselves are desperate for points at the bottom of the table.

Colts have had some good performances lately without getting the rewards and their trip to Southampton Oval might just result in their first win of the season.

Rangers suffered defeat in midweek in the Friendship Trophy when they went down to Boulevard. Though they have netted 10 goals in the league -- the fourth highest -- their front line is still not as potent as coach Gary Darrell would like as Janeiro Tucker has accounted for the bulk of the scoring.

The former midfielder has netted seven of those goals but others like Kwame Tucker and Alfred Wolffe have not produced. As a result other combinations have been tried with Tucker being partnered up front by Dawud Tucker and Tillman Darrell in the last match. Dijoun Simons and Rohaan Simons, who came on as subs against Boulevard, may soon also get a chance to start up front.

Rangers, presently two points behind Village, will need two wins from their last three matches against Colts, St. George's and PHC to return to the Dudley Eve.

The remaining two matches this weekend could also go either way.

Somerset Trojans will be hoping to move back into the top four when they meet Dandy Town at home. Both teams suffered defeats last weekend, Somerset being hammered 5-0 by Vasco while Town were beaten 3-2 at home by PHC Zebras.

It's reasonble to assume that Town will soon break out of their deep sleep and if they win tomorrow -- and against Eagles next weekend -- they might have a lot to play for against Village in their final match of the first half.

PHC are tied on points with Town, just one ahead of Boulevard, and they also have a slim chance of reaching the top four by Christmas. Tomorrow the Zebras meet draw specialists Boulevard at PHC Stadium knowing that a win could lift them another notch in the standings.

Boulevard looked a determined team against Rangers on Tuesday and this could be their chance to pick up their first win of the season. However, a quastion mark hangs over the fitness of Stevie Wade who went off with a shoulder injury.

In Second Division action leaders Devonshire Cougars meet Prospect at Police Field while second-placed Wolves take on Paget at Devonshire Rec. In the other matches St. David's entertain Hamilton Parish and BAA meet Young Men's Social Club at BAA Field.

The BFA have announced rescheduled games and time changes for matches this weekend and during the week. Today, Alliance Division make-up matches see Boulevard taking on Prospect at St. David's at 3.00 and Devonshire Cougars meeting Somerset Eagles at Devonshire Rec. at the same time.

The Minor Division match today between Southampton Rangers and St. David's has been switched to Shelly Bay II at 11.15.

Next Thursday the Wolves v Devonshire Cougars match, which was postponed last weekend because of rain, will be played at Devonshire Rec at 9.00, following a Commercial KO Cup rescheduled match between Prison Officers and Fire Service.

No date has been set for the FA Cup replay between Social Club and Lobster Pot.

MAIN THREAT -- Vasco's Corey Hill will be looking to add to his seven goals this season when the First Division leaders take on struggling Somerset Eagles tomorrow.
