Late strike lifts Vasco
(after extra-time) Vasco won the Dudley Eve for the fourth time yesterday when Sammy Swan's cracking goal in the second period of extra-time sealed a narrow win at blustery Wellington Oval.
Just five minutes were left in the game when, with penalty kicks looming, the veteran striker smashed a rocket into the roof of the net from 15 yards after a Vasco move on the edge of the Colts penalty area resulted in Clay Smith's cheeky back-heel opening the defence for Swan to run through and shoot first time.
Conditions -- windy, cold and some early rain -- made it a difficult afternoon for the teams. But Vasco faced another challenge at the start of the match when the three players they dropped from the scoreless first leg all declined to sit on the bench as substitutes.
Burton Bruce, Ascento Russell and Tillman Darrell were all dropped to make way for Earl Richardson, Swan and Dwight Basden but all three declined to serve the team as subs.
Afterwards coach John Rebello admitted their actions could warrant disciplinary action. "It's not much to comment on, but it's something we'll have to deal with,'' said Rebello.
"Everybody feels they should play but as coaches we felt this would be the best team and at the end of the day this is why the victory is that much sweeter.
"We'll have to deal with that situation as the club executives.'' As in the first final earlier in the week, goals were hard to come by and for the first time the two finals finished scoreless in regulation time.
There were some good chances, though, to break the deadlock. An excellent chance fell to Vasco midway through the first half when Colts' goalkeeper Troy Hall was exposed after dribbling the ball well out of his penalty area. His clearance attempt near the centre circle was blocked and as he frantically tried to race back towards goal Kentoine Jennings hurried a shot that rolled wide of the open goal. Vasco had been controlling play up to that point though Colts did come more into it late in the half with some threatening breaks.
Chances came more regularly after the restart as Keishon Smith went close for Colts in the opening minutes, to be followed by an effort for Vasco which saw Keith Jennings just fail to connect with a low, hard ball into the box by Ottis Steede as the ball rolled past the far post. Jennings then set up Steede whose low shot was saved by the diving Hall. Both teams boosted their attacks with substitutions as Clay Smith came on for Jennings in the 62nd minute and Sullivan Phillips once again replaced Quincy Aberdeen in the Colts attack.
A ball into the Colts box fell perfectly for Swan to seal a late win but unfortunately for him it was on his weaker left foot and the effort finished high and wide.
And then after Colts wasted another good chance in the last minute of the first extra-time period when Phillips' ball into the box saw Sekai Waldron fail to turn it into goal at the far post, Swan made Colts pay with a brilliant winner.
"I honestly thought we had the better possession of the game, but on the counter-attacks they were dangerous,'' said Rebello.
