Netts and Signworx remain undefeated in Georgia

Nett gain: Netts junior netballers impressed during a successful tour of Atlanta earlier this month

Local netball teams Netts and Signworx did the Island extremely proud on a whirlwind tour of Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month. Both teams remained undefeated in matches against their Georgia Summer League opponents.Netts were represented at the junior level (under 14) while Signworx competed at the senior level (16 and under).Signworx won all of their matches against Crusaders Atlanta Sports Club and a Georgia Summer League Select.Signworx recorded back-to-back wins (16-11 and 36-27) against Crusaders before handing the Georgia Summer League Select a 37-14 defeat to cap a memorable tour of the United States.Signworx’s team included promising players Asante Chapman and Diara Benjamin who both travelled with Bermuda’s senior national squad to this year’s Americas Federation Netball Association Netball Championships in Trinidad. The team were coached by Gina Benjamin and Jene Charles. Not to be outdone, Netts prevailed in their two matches against CrusadersThe local youth team recorded comfortable 17-5 and 11-2 wins against their American opponents.Netts were coached by Merle Parfitt and Marissa Wainwright.During their week-long stay in the US Netts players received valuable pointers from UK-based netball coach and umpire Valerie Shaw who officiated in the ISL Netball Tournament held in Bermuda two years ago.If all goes accordingly, Shaw hopes to bring a team from the UK to compete on the Island’s shores next year.Commenting on her team’s recent tour, Signworx coach Benjamin said: “The trip was definitely a success. The mission was mainly for our girls to play netball and also bond new friendships.“Our club motto is fostering and developing our girls for the game of life and we definitely were able to achieve that.”Benjamin said the players all acquitted themselves well on court against quality opposition.“Going out there we knew we would be playing against a lot of players from the Islands (Caribbean) so we expected to have tough competition,” she added. “We actually expected the competition to be tougher, but our girls really stepped up and played excellent.”Domestically, Signworx have evolved into a reckoning force in recent years.Last season the club’s two senior teams finished among the top five in the Senior Winter League while two of its junior teams won their respective divisions (under 12 and under 16) after completing the campaign unbeaten. Amazingly, Signworx’s under 16 team have not tasted defeat in two seasons. It is this sort of success which seems to be attracting more players to join the club’s ranks.“Our numbers have increased over the past five years,” Benjamin said. “We may have started out with 30 girls and now have over 70.“Last year in the league we had six teams (four junior and two senior teams) and we are definitely looking to have more teams in the future to help our club continue to grow.”
