Get the inside track on a career in IT

Job opportunities and careers in information technology will be highlighted at a presentation at Berkeley Institute on Monday morning.

Open to all graduating students across the Island, the presentation has been organised by the IT Outreach Programme of the Ewan Sampson Scholarship Trust and will run from 8.30 a.m. to 9.15 a.m..

Speakers will include Eddie Saints, CEO of Cable and Wireless; Diane Miller, executive director of the XL Education Initiative; Marissa Hall, director designate of e-commerce for Government; Michael Branco, enterprise architect for Promisant and Del-Keesha Hanley the 1999 Ewan Sampson scholar, who is now a junior developer with XL Re.

According to the Outreach Programme, information technology is fast becoming Bermuda's third industry, offering major job opportunities for Bermudians. In 2000, there were over 800,000 IT job opportunities in the US which could not be filled by Americans. "This resulted in 550,000 overseas applicants being brought into the US to fill these jobs," a press release said.

Careers in IT and computer technologies include; digital imaging, web designing, software engineer, telecommunications, graphic designer, computer programmer, 3D animator, streaming media, software developer/designer, management information systems, systems engineer, assistive technology, database administration and e-commerce.

The Ewan Sampson Scholarship Trust was formed in memory of Ewan Sampson, a former Saltus student who died tragically in a cycle accident in 1998, aged 17. In his final year at Saltus he worked part time for one of the IT service companies in Hamilton. Although talented in several areas, he had chosen IT as his career path and at the time of his death had been accepted at several universities.
