Epic clash settled by spot-kick agony

(Village won 10-9 on penalties) Full back Maurice Lowe missed his Town's 10th penalty to give North Village victory during this Dudley Eve first-round contest at BAA Field before a modest crowd on Saturday night.

The miss by the 23-year-old defender spelt the end of a thrilling climax which produced an extraordinary marathon series of penalty kicking -- perhaps a process that could have been limited had both goalkeepers, Zane Hendrickson of Village and Stefan Dupres of Town been more proficient.

Lowe actually had his first attempt stopped by Hendrickson but the goalkeeper was penalised for moving forward. But the defender then watched in agony as his second attempt sailed wide of the post, putting an end to the gruelling process.

Village were deserving victors, having controlled majority of the play and only yielding to their opponents late in the second half.

The opening half belong to Village who grabbed a 2-1 lead at the interval. It was a blunder by goalkeeper Dupres that led to the opener with Quincy Paynter scoring after 20 minutes, but Hendrickson in the Village goal came up with a foul-up of his own that enabled Hurdle to head home the equaliser three minutes later.

But Paynter gave Village a worthy lead at the half after combining with Kevin Jennings to score from close in after 37 minutes.

Kevin Jennings upped the Village lead to 3-1 after 57 minutes when he powered home a free-kick from 18 yards, but Town fought back and reduced the lead to one a minute later when substitute Carlos Smith converted a penalty.

Town piled intense pressure on the Village defence with Smith working tirelessly in the middle, but substitute Neil (Diamond) Robinson stunned Town when he curled in a left-wing corner after 75 minutes to make it 4-2 for Village.

Some fans left thinking that it was the knockout blow and Town could not recover from the setback, but Smith again converted from the penalty spot after 84 minutes after a defender handled.

Then with precious few seconds left it was left for Hurdle to head home a free-kick to force the game into agonising penalty kicks.
