Smith strikes twice to frustrate Village

Devonshire Colts came from behind twice to take a point from this Martonmere Cup tie at White Hill yesterday -- their second in the last minute from striker Keishon Smith.

It was a setback for Village, whose victory seemed inevitable with the seconds ticking away.

However, coach Kenny Thompson could take some satisfaction from the result after Village lost their first game in the competition.

Torrential rain showers spoiled what could have been an interesting first half, with control in the conditions hugely difficult.

Village dominated without having any clear-cut chances while a Colts' defence, marshalled well by centre-backs MaKonnen Hollis and Shannon Burgess, prevailed.

Under better conditions play improved in the second half and the fans were rewarded with all four goals.

Kaiwon Dill put Village ahead after 50 minutes when he combined with veteran Elliott Jennings to score from close in.

Kevin Jennings should have put them ahead 2-0 after 56 minutes but, after slipping through the defence, had his angled shot pushed wide by the advancing Troy Hall in the Colts' goal.

Aljame Zuill likewise blew a chance for Colts after 59 minutes, hurrying a shot over from 15 yards when he should have been on target.

As play grew more intense tempers began to flare and Village's bantam player Daniel Jennings was sent off for violent conduct after 72 minutes.

Incredibly, he had come on as a substitute for Devon Brangman just a minute earlier.

Village were made to pay dearly and after 75 minutes Keishon Smith netted from close range to level the scores. Three minutes later, just when it looked as though Colts were beginning to take the upper hand with their one player advantage, Village struck again.

Neil (Diamond) Robinson raced down the middle of the defence and smashed in a thunderous shot to put Village 2-1 up.

However, Keishon Smith's perseverance paid dividends at the end when he touched home a cross from the right from about eight yards.
