Keegan king of the majors

Keegan Bradley hits a crucial approach shot at the final hole to set up a one-shot victory over Charl Swatzel in yesterday's Grand Slam.

The PGA Champion ground out a level-par 71 to finish on four-under-par and held off a determined final round charge form Charl Schwartzel to win the PGA Grand Slam by one shot at Port Royal yesterday.Schwartzel, meanwhile, fired a course-record equalling six-under par 65 to claw his way back from three-over overnight to reach three-under.In a nervy finish the pair were separated by just a shot going down 18 and when Bradley hit his approach wide of the green, the South African had a slight advantage even with a snaking downhill putt for birdie.Schwartzel has made a habit of comeback wins this year, while Bradley is no stranger to play-offs having come through two to win the HP Byron Nelson Championship and the PGA Championship this year.“I was thinking it’s probably going to go to a play-off considering how my year has gone,” said Bradley. “I was standing over the chip (his third shot) and thinking ‘I better get this up-and-down and maybe get into a play-off’.”As it turned out Schwartzel missed his birdie attempt by the narrowest of margins, but Bradley still had a five-footer to win.“It was a lot more intense than I thought it was going to be. Maybe because of the players that were here, coming down the stretch it felt like any other tournament that I played in. It was very, very intense and I was nervous over that five-footer to win.”Schwartzel put himself into a position to win after a run of five birdies on the front nine which was reminiscent of his dramatic Masters win, and his chip in from a greenside bunker at nine for the last of those birdies drew him level for the lead after he started the day seven shots back.Tied with Schwartzel at two-under going into the back nine, Bradley edged ahead with a birdie at 10 and while the pair wrestled for the lead from then on, it was a shot advantage that he never lost. Schwartzel bogeyed 13 when he missed the green on the tricky par-three, and although he got the shot back at 15, Bradley stayed solid and was the only one of the group to hit the 16 green in high winds. After hitting the “best shot of his life” to eagle seven in the first round, Bradley hit an equally good approach at 17, although he gave most of the credit for that to his caddie Steve Hale.“Pepsi (Hale) talked me into hitting that three hybrid and it was the right club, I actually wanted to hit a four,” said Bradley.Reaching the green in two was essential for Bradley as Schwartzel had already done so, and the pair both birdied to take the Slam down to the final hole.“This is a really very nice way to top off the season, it’s been crazy,” said Bradley. “If you would have told me at the beginning of the year I would have won the Grand Slam I probably would have laughed at you.“It all seems like a dream just now.”McIlroy’s dreams of being the youngest winner of the Grand Slam ended on a day when a couple of wild swings cost him dear and his troubles on the greens continued.Joint overnight leader alongside Bradley, McIlroy made a solid start with six straight pars, and with Bradley bogeying the first and fifth holes, the US Open champion had a two-shot lead at one stage. The wheels started to come off for the Northern Irishman when his second shot at seven went way left and he had to take an unplayable and closed the front nine with three bogeys to drop to one-under.A run of six straight pars to start the back nine kept him in the hunt, until a wild tee shot at 15 sent him into a hazard and he had to chip in to save par. He missed the green at 16 and that bogey dropped him to four-over for the round and even par for the tournament.Darren Clarke was never in the hunt following his opening round 77 but at one-under through nine he at least looked like earning some respectability on the second day. That ended with four bogeys on the back side of the course and consecutive birdies at 14 and 15 dropped him to three-over for the round and nine-over for the two days. For more pictures click here.

Not my day: Darren Clarke watches as his putt on the final hole narrowly misses the cup. There were several more of the same as the Northern Irishman carded a miserable a nine-over-par for the two days.
