Inspiring the youth: Sherwin Lee

Twenty-year-old Sherwin Lee is not your typical young man.As our country faces huge obstacles in terms of our youth, young Mr Lee is standing firm with a desire to reach his peers and empower them with the love of Jesus Christ. As a result, he has organised several special youth praise services, under the blessing of Apostle Jimmie Denwiddie of New Creation Worship Centre, over the last few years. The latest “YES” Youth Empowerment Series service is planned for tonight.“I want to empower young people,” Mr Lee said. “The YES meetings are designed to allow young people to experience God in their own way and to bring it to their own level.”Feeling that traditional church services are somewhat out of date for today’s youth, Mr Lee wants to give his peers the opportunities to lead services, dance and minister to God in their own style.YES is “a youth ministry designed and committed to empowering young people through passionate praise and worship, the operation and birthing of the five-fold ministry gifts and the manifestation of the nine gifts of the spirit”.His hope is that young people will begin to give more than lip-service to God and church, but to make faith a part of their lives.Mr Lee sees many youths as very “religious” but it is more of a front they talk about God, but God cannot be seen in their lives.“It’s a form of godliness, but they are denying the power.”“A lot of young people are desensitised . . . They know church, but they don’t know God.”Mr Lee also desires to encourage those who aren’t ‘church’ kids to come along and see what it is all about.“I’d like them to come and test the waters and have an experience themselves . . . This ministry has an awesome power to help reverse peer pressure. It’s more than just a Sunday morning experience it’s a lifestyle.”Sent to Sunday School as a child, Sherwin Lee wasn’t really interested in church things in his early teen years. However, his love for music and his talents as a keyboardist brought him back to the church.“I came for one thing, and got something else,” he said with a smile. At the age of 16, he rededicated his life to Christ, and at 18, he was called into full-time ministry. A Berkeley Institute graduate, Mr Lee plans to attend Valor Christian College this fall to study pastoral leadership. The school, founded by the Rev. Rod Parsley, is in Columbus, Ohio.“I feel favoured because doors have been opened for me,” Mr Lee revealed. “God blesses me in spite of me.”The service, which will be held at the New Creation Worship Centre, which is located in the old Berkeley gymnasium, will begin at 7pm and will feature praise and worship, led by Tricray Astwood and Adrian Jones. There will also be performances by the New Genesis mime team and Dynamic Connections, a dance team from Shekinah Worship Centre.Mr Lee also plans to speak, focusing on the tongue.“No matter how low, how hard you hit the ground, you can get up,” he revealed.“There is power in the tongue if you still have your voice, your voice will set you free.“Many have their own personal testimonies about what happens at these events the workings of the Holy Spirit.”He wants other young people to know that you can’t be too young to minister and do God’s work. My goal is to help bring churches together.“Any kingdom divided amongst itself, it’ll fall. Though we all have different visions, our commission is the same.”
