Construction of wireless network is launched
Bermuda Digital Communications Ltd. has started construction of its wireless network to provide cellular telephone service on the Island in competition with The Bermuda Telephone Co. Ltd.
The company on Wednesday announced it will start building its network at six sites to provide coverage over the Island. Once the network has been built and tested Bermuda Digital expects to start providing service at the beginning of next year.
The company had delayed starting up its network for about two years since competition was introduced in Bermuda's telecommunications market, mainly due to a lack of financing.
This year the company received $4 million in equity and debt financing from Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. a telecommunications company with headquarters in the US Virgin Islands and operations in Guyana. The deal gave Atlantic a stake of about 30 percent in Bermuda Digital. The original owners of Bermuda Digital are chairman and chief executive officer Kurt Eve, members of his family, Cyril Rance, Kevin Stevenson, chief operating officer Michael Leverock, and the Fairmount Trust.
