Hundreds march on Parliament protesting principals' move

Children march on the House of Assembly to protest over plans to move two school principals.

More than 100 parents and children of two schools this morning marched on Parliament in protest over a decision to move their principals.PTA Presidents Azuhaa Coleman of Victor Scott, and Quinton Ming of TN Tatem Middle School, presented a letter to Government protesting the Ministry of Education's unilateral decisions to move principals Valerie Williams and Francine McMahon to other schools.Educators and representatives of other public schools joined the march in solidarity.Premier Paula Cox joined Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith outside the House of Assembly, commending parents for speaking out.Ms Cox indicated that the demand by parents for more consultation could move to an implementation of school councils as suggested in the Hopkins Report. However, Dame Jennifer said putting councils in place with parents on board could not be put in place quickly.“It would require an amendment to the Act,” she said. She added: “In our letter of response, one thing I indicated is that there is no role for the PTA in an employer-employee matter.”Dame Jennifer said the Ministry's decisions were in accordance with union collective bargaining agreements.Speaking afterwards, Ms Coleman said: “They've told us that already. We are not trying to control the Ministry. All we are trying to do is get the Minister to understand that if they are going to make decisions that affect us, they need our input.”A joint statement presented shortly before noon described the demonstration as a “communication march”.It began: “Our Communication March is not a demonstration of discontent with Government. It is not only about ‘four principals being rotated within the public school system' without parental input in the decision to do so.“Our actions speak to the relationship we as parents insist upon having with our Government, regarding our children's education moving forward.”The letter added: “If we have miscalculated and our government continues to refuse to support us in this objective, it will stand exposed. And we will continue on to do right by our children by reinforcing our March with concerted actions, including to have its decision reviewed by the courts of law while the policy that gave rise to it is thrown to them mercy of the court of public opinion.”For parents at Victor Scott school, the transfer of Ms Williams is an emotional cause. In a recent statement Ms Coleman said: “These children were shaken by a murder right there on the very playground where they love to roll and play, where innocence is lived and enjoyed and where for some children they finally feel stable.“Some of these children are children who have gone through 15 different teachers in three years before the arrival of Ms. Williams. If our principal is transferred, the next will be the third principal in a matter of just 5 years.“ We are talking about children whose parents wake up every morning and work their fingers to the bone just like every other parent to provide a good life for their children.“We are talking about a 125 children who are being told that their future education has been decided by the Ministry without needing the input from any of their parents.“This is a decision that directly affects the education of 125 children and the parents are supposed to just shut up and accept it? Do we not have rights as parents in Bermuda?”Ms Coleman said: “If the Ministry can to this to VSS which is a school that educates some of the most delicate, sensitive yet vulnerable students in Bermuda then they can definitely do it to every other government school without any hesitation.“We are not asking to make decisions or to interfere with them being made, but to be given the opportunity to give our perspective on major-issues prior to decision-making when it comes to our children.“We should have been included in this decision and we request that the Ministry voids the decision to move Principal Valerie Williams first and that an undertaking is given to involve the parent body at VSS before any further major decisions are made. Is that too hard to ask?The protest demonstration follows the decision announced last month by Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith that will rotate four public school Principals to other schools in the new school year.At the VSS meeting on March 21 the Minister said the decision was “not political” before a packed school hall where 200 parents showed up to hear the announcement and air their views.Over the past four weeks Ms Coleman said several meetings were held and letters sent to the Ministry seeking clarification. “The last letter requested a sit down meeting with the Ministry,” said Ms Coleman.“To date we have not received a response, so we are moving on and we have retained counsel to challenge the Ministry's decision-making process in court.”Both PTA's called for public support from all school PTA's, parents, students, educators and families in general for the protest march, which set out from Victor Scott for Parliament at 11.30am this morning, cheered along by onlookers.
