Call to emulate Desmond Tutu’s work

Bermuda will send South African activist and retired Bishop Desmond Tutu a message of congratulations for his 80th birthday along with a call to emulate his work.The Nobel laureate celebrates his birthday tomorrow.At a ceremony in the foyer of City Hall, Glenn Fubler, founder of the community group Imagine Bermuda, joined with Canon Thomas Nisbett, Chamber of Commerce head Stephen Todd, Community Development Minister Michael Weeks and Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling, in a celebration of Mr Tutu’s legacy.Canon Nisbett read out a letter on Bermuda’s behalf.“Reaching this milestone, you are obviously not prepared to simply rest on your many laurels, but you are even using this occasion to encourage the rest of us to exercise qualities of care to those less fortune,” Canon Nisbett said.Imagine Bermuda is to host a symposium on October 13 at St Paul AME Centennial Hall, asking participates to imagine what motivates people to go “above and beyond to better their communities and better the world”.Mr Fubler also called on Bermuda to stand in solidarity with the US on October 16, when a monument honouring Martin Luther King is unveiled in Washington, DC.Mr Weeks told the gathering: “The legacy of the former Archbishop of Cape Town is well known. His example in taking a stand against the system of apartheid in those most desperate times is well documented. One thing that shines through his example of great courage is his great sense of compassion.“Tutu led the effort in the early post-apartheid period in moving forward the process of reconciliation. This was not only to address the crimes of apartheid, but, more importantly, he carried out the process through pulling the diverse people of the rainbow nation together.”Mr Weeks said Mr Tutu plans to devote the next 80 days to community service.“In the words of Desmond Tutu,” he said, “do your little bit of good where you are. It is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”Mr Fubler said Imagine Bermuda intends to publish Mr Tutu’s “birthday wish list” later today, on the Chewstick Foundation’s website.
