Wesly Guiteau finds his brother, helps rescue another man

SavedThis Haitian man was rescued from a building by a team which included Bermuda resident Wesly Guiteau.

Bermuda-based broker Wesly Guiteau has found his missing brother and rescued a man buried under debris after travelling to Haiti to help with relief efforts.

The 39-year-old, who is originally from the Caribbean country, returned there last week after the massive earthquake to search for his brother and take medical supplies and food to his fellow Haitians.

His latest dispatches to family, friends and colleagues here describe how he found his brother and was able to evacuate him, his 70-year-old aunt and his aunt’s cousin — a blind 91-year-old nun — from the devastated capital Port-au-Prince, which he terms a “war zone”.

The Pembroke father-of-two wrote on Tuesday: “Such a marvellous turn of events when I know that death, fear, suffering, anger and fatigue were my unwanted friends just 24 hours ago.”

He says he and his team of aid workers estimate that they helped a thousand people in a single day on Tuesday, by providing supplies and other assistance.

“On our way to evacuate my aunts and brother we had to stop to save one life,” he continues. “He was buried under debris for six hours. We took him to hospital and I think he is OK now.”

On Wednesday he e-mailed to say he was planning a second trip to Port-au-Prince from his home city of Lascahobas to take much-needed filtered water to earthquake survivors.

And he described the aftershock which hit the island that day, saying it created panic among people.

“This time it was felt all the way here in Lascahobas and I have no idea what happened in the capital,” wrote Mr. Guiteau. “It is now 6.30 a.m. and the entire city of Lascahobas is up... standing in the streets trying to avoid the worse.

“More psychological fear than anything else. No damages reported here.”

Mr. Guiteau has teamed up with Haiti Village Health — a charity run by King Edward VII Memorial doctor Tiffany Keenan — and is asking that cash be given to them.

Doug Jones, his colleague at Willis, appealed again yesterday for people here to give generously to help.

“He is in the Dominican Republic buying more supplies. Wes continues to be effective on the ground and your donations are continuing to help him achieve this.”

l Donations can be made to Haiti Village Health via Bank of Bermuda account number 010-871135-001. Put either “Lascahobas Relief” or “Wesly Guiteau” in the memo part of the transfer.
