Sticking to the basics

Orange was named the new ‘it’ colour of the season at a recent New York Fashion Week event, but on the streets of Hamilton it was all about traditional black and white.

The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section spotted three stylish ladies and one fashion forward guy on our weekly walk about town.

One thing they all had in common?

They stuck to the basics when it came to colour and added interest to their outfits by featuring bold patterned and textured fabrics.

KayLeigh Scott, 23, described her style as classic and a bit feminine.

She said: “I kind of look for unique things and like to dress in a way that makes me look different.”

She finds inspiration for her outfits by flipping through fashion magazines, websites and blogs — one of her favourites being www.lookbook.nu/.

But she said it’s not just what a person wears that makes them beautiful.

“Confidence is really beautiful because I think that everyone has something about them that makes them special or attractive in their own way,” she said. “When you are confident you can show your beauty off in the best way,”

Twenty-six-year-old Alex Dill represented for the stylish men on the Island this week.

The medical assistant said he tries to look professional and picks out what he’s going to wear based on how he feels that day.

He primarily likes to don bow ties in a colour that pops more than the shirt he is wearing.

For him there’s nothing more beautiful than a smile and warm personality.

He said: “I consider those beautiful, because even if you dress a certain way, but don’t have a good personality to go with it, then it won’t come across as striking as it could be.”

Hairdressers Gemma Howe, 27, and Lisa Leigh, 29, were both inspired by fashions from the High Street shops in London, like Selfridges.

Ms Leigh said she likes wearing girlie pieces and will often go online or look through magazines for new inspiration.

She said the most attractive feature for her was often a person’s eyes. “If you have a bold eye look that can be very beautiful,” she said.

For Ms Howe nice hair, a good smile and bold fashion are all things that make a person stand out, but she said confidence was still the most beautiful quality a person could have.

“You can always tell if someone loves how the look and feels good about the skin they are in. It makes the outfit and their appearance just shine from the inside out.”
