D-Day for World Cup hopefuls
Bermudian cricket enthusiasts will be having a nervous morning, anxiously awaiting news from London on whether the Island?s bid to host World Cup 2007 matches has been given the nod.
At 10.30 a.m. today, the International Cricket Council will announce at a Press conference whether the investment of thousands of dollars and months of hard work by Bermuda Cricket Board, Government and consultancy firm Brailsford & Dunlavey have been in vain when they name the eight venues for the tournament.
Five silver briefcases containing a 291-page document, drawings and a DVD were submitted to the World Cup organisers in Barbados in May by local Cricket Board officials as part of the Island?s bid to host group and/or warm-up matches.
Aspects of the bid included bringing in portable seating to the National Sports Centre to boost the capacity to 15,000 as well as laying on cruise ships for additional accommodation during the tournament.
The decisions have been made following the Venue Assessment Team?s visits in May and June this year to the various Caribbean countries ? as well as Bermuda and the US ? interested in taking a slice of the greatest pie on the international cricket calendar.
ICC president Ehsan Mani and West Indies Cricket Board president Teddy Griffith will announce the eight successful venues and on July 13 ? in a Press conference in Jamaica ? the details of the matches to be played at the various venues will be announced.
