Darron delivers, but scorer title proving elusive

Leading scorer Darron Simons is well on target to pass the 18 goals Ellington Weldon of Devonshire Colts scored in all competitions last season.

But the Hornets hot shot isn't the favourite to walk away with the leading goal scorer award in the First Division which has been won by Weldon for the past two years.

That's because Simons, who has managed 13 league and cup goals in the first half of the season, has scored just two of those goals in the league, from where the leading scorer will emerge. His last league goal was on November 6 when Town beat Devonshire Cougars 2-0, though at least he can boast having scored in all five competitions Town have been involved in this season, including the one-off Charity Cup at the start of the season.

Weldon scored 15 of his 18 goals last season in the league, beating out last season's most valuable player Carlos Smith of Town whose 17 goals in all competitions helped Town land the league, Dudley Eve and Friendship Trophy titles last season.

Weldon also landed a sponsorship deal with local sports store Sports-A-Wear after his second straight season as the top scorer in the First Division.

Unfortunately for him the goals have not come this season, and his hopes of a better second half have been further hampered by a slight hamstring pull (which came against Forties in the FA Cup) and tendonitis in the knee, which will likely keep him out of this weekend's match against Vasco.

A look at this season's top scorers in the league paints an interesting picture with Dennis Robinson, who recently gave up the overall lead to Simons, leading the way with seven goals (he has 11 overall) while second is Clay Smith of St. George's on five (seven overall).

Like Simons, Carlos Smith has managed just two goals in the league while `defending champion' Ellington Weldon has netted just once this season, having missed the start of the campaign.

Weldon admits he has a lot of ground to make up in the second half of the season, especially now with the injury. He has already tipped the player he thinks will replace him.

"My pick right now would be Clay,'' said Weldon yesterday. "I told people that from the beginning. If anybody wins it I think it will be him...or Dennis (Robinson).'' In the Second Division where those teams have played fewer cup games, the race is even tighter for the scoring title won last year by Marlon Lindsay.

Lindsay, then of Wolves, scored 14 goals in the league, which was just one better than Terrance Christopher of Somerset Eagles.

Lindsay is now at First Division club Devonshire Cougars and Christopher is one of those chasing the title he will vacate. All of Christopher's seven goals have come in the league and he trails David Gibbs of Port Royal by one goal. All of Gibbs' eight goals have also come in the league, including four in one match early in the season against Hamilton Parish.

Also in contention are Southampton Rangers pair Herbie Dillas and Alfred Wolffe and Rembert Hill of Social Club, all on five. St. David youngster Keith Jennings has four goals in the league.

Overall, Dillas and Gibbs lead the charts with eight goals each while Hill, Christopher, Jennings and Wolffe all have seven.

The match between Southampton Rangers and Prospect has been rescheduled for January 13 at BAA Field at 7.00. The match was postponed on October 30.

Rangers presently lead the standings by two points over Somerset Eagles and with a game in hand, having won all seven of their matches so far.

Also among the list of rescheduled matches is the Alliance Division Knockout quarter-finals which have been brought forward from February 4 to be played on January 21. The matches are: Prospect v St. David's, Devonshire Cougars v Devonshire Colts, North Village v PHC and Somerset v Dandy Town.

The Commercial Knockout Cup match between North Village Rams and Lobster Pot, which was postponed on December 17, will also be played on January 21.

DARRON SIMONS -- Has a lot of catching up to do as just two of his 13 goals this season have come in the league.
