Tributes paid to motocross rider killed in race

Dale Skipper Boorman

Bermudian motocross rider Dale Boorman has died in an accident during a race in Florida, his family have confirmed.

Mr Boorman, 20, was killed at the Moto X Raceway in Pinellas Park last night after colliding head-on with 23-year-old Matthew Gardner on the track.

According to local police, Mr Boorman, who had been competing in Bermuda motocross meets from an early age, was hit in the head and upper body by the other rider’s bike.

Mr Boorman’s father, Dean, is believed to have been at the track when the collision happened.

Mr Gardner did not suffer any serious injuries in the accident.

This morning Mr Boorman’s grandmother confirmed that Mr Boorman had been killed, but declined to comment further.

Wayne Scott, Minister of Community, Culture and Sports, today offered his condolences to the family of Mr Boorman.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Dale Boorman. We were sad to learn of his passing this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” said Mr Scott.

“Bermuda has lost a young and talented motocross rider. We hope that his passion and enthusiasm for the sport will be honoured and remembered by all.”

Tributes flooding Mr Boorman’s Facebook page recalled “a beautiful and genuine soul” and “a truly good person”, with many expressing their grief over the tragedy of such a young man being taken so soon.

“I’m still in shock that this happened and my prayers are with your family,” posted Daria Kimmy.

Mark Selley Jr wrote: “I’m sure you’ve found the throttle up there already.”

Many others spoke of growing up with Mr Boorman, saying they were “lucky to have known” him.

“From camping, kite flying, boat racing and everything in between, you were always there. You were my friend first and my brother second,” wrote Danielle Lightbourn.
