Teachers set to celebrate 50th anniversary

Teachers Rugby Football Club are about to celebrate their 50th anniversary. And the club are trying to reach out to as many former members as possible for the celebrations.Former captain of Teachers, Derek Hurdle, said: “We know that many people have played over the years for the club and we have contacted many of them but there are some former players and supporters out there who do not know what we are planning and we would like them to contact us.”Teachers were founded by a quintet of English teachers whose early opposition was mainly provided by sailors from visiting UK naval forces. The Naval Dockyard was a hive of activity in the 1960s and matches between the club and visiting HM ships were played nearby at Malabar. The club also played at Prospect near the National Stadium before moving on to National Sports Club, now the Montessori School.Games these days take place at BAA on Friday nights and at Malabar Sports Fields and the National Sports Centre during the season.Founding members were Gabe Rodrigues, Olly McKittrick, Alan Leigh, Ted Pearson and Cary Maddern and the entire team was initially made up of ex-pat schoolmasters, some of whom came out of retirement to join the fledging club.Post match entertainment has always been a high priority in rugby circles and it’s no different in Bermuda. In the early days the club didn’t have a regular ‘watering hole’ and met at Huntley Towers in Paget where four members were living.Later they used a room at the back of the 21 Club which is now the Pickled Onion restaurant. In 1975 they settled in at the Old Colony Club and later moved to Halfway House, an old Bermudian property in Flatts Village. The Docksiders bar on Front Street in Hamilton is the current headquarters and has been for some years.Teachers have collected a number of honours during their history. They have won three consecutive league championships in recent years and supplied many players for the Bermuda national sides competing in the Caribbean Championships and World Cup qualifiers.Their top players been selected to join the West Indies squad which competes on the world stage, especially in sevens. Some the dates for the 50th anniversary are:Friday, September 30 Cocktail Party , Location: Chez McHughs.Saturday, October 1 Denton Hurdle Memorial games followed by evening party.Sunday, October 2 Club Brunch, Location: Whaler Inn (tentative location).February, 2012 Club members to attend church in honour of Denton Hurdle.Easter, 2012 Two tours.
