The future is with OBA

The Willowbank Hotel, which is closing with the loss of 46 jobs.

September 29, 2011Dear Sir,So now another 150 jobs are gone — 105 at Citi and 46 at Willowbank. I wonder if we'll be testing the Paula Cog Theory of Work Permit Replacement? As Elspeth Brewin so correctly said in a letter the other day, if Paula thinks that when she gets rid of a work permit holder, an opportunity suddenly appears for a Bermudian, she not only couldn't be more wrong, but the loss of these guest workers results in ‘trickle down' job losses to Bermudians — the landlord, the gardener, the pool cleaner, the guy at the grocery store, the taxi driver, and the housekeeper — all of whom are going to feel the impact. And make no mistake about it, these job losses are just the continuing spiral of incompetence, ignorance of business practice and lack of leadership by the PLP over the past 13 years. They don't have the tools to understand these problems and they have created a climate of entitlement combined with an attitude of ‘we ain't never gonna compromise ...' which seems to be the mantra of their partners, the BIU.Look at any restaurant in Bermuda and see all the non-Bermudians who are working their butts off because Bermudians think if they can't earn $30 an hour, the job is beneath them. Every day we hear another complaint about a rude bus driver, a salesperson who treats customers with disdain and criminals who treat tourists like prey. I lay this at the feet of the PLP who have sold their people a bill of goods that couldn't be sustained even if we lived in the Garden of Eden. The attitude of the PLP is one of incompetence mixed with ignorance, arrogance and embarrassment. They are content to pay themselves huge salaries and save their (safe) seats so they can reap the rewards of enormous pensions and the best health benefits in the western world. All you PLP voters should go ask Jennifer, Randy, Paula and the rest of Ewart's Gang how much they're worth today. They may be new and they may not have it all on a paper yet, but the future is with the OBA who clearly have the best of the business leaders and the young entrepreneurs of the future. They have successfully mixed the experience of the past with the fresh ideas of the future. In my book, there is only one possible answer to our problems and it's not at Alaska Hall.POLLY SAWYERSouthampton
