The ACE Foundation announced their 2012 scholarship winners yesterday to help fund two students’ university studies.Julia Dunne, a 17-year old Bermuda High School graduate, was selected from a field of almost 50 candidates for the Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship, which will cover the cost of her four-year tuition. She will commence a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in September. On completion of her degree Julia plans to return to Bermuda to pursue a career in the insurance industry.“We were pleased to receive almost 50 applications, and with such a talented pool of candidates choosing a single recipient was a challenging process.” said Lori Samson, trustee of the ACE Foundation — Bermuda. “But it wasn’t purely Julia’s academic achievements that resulted in her selection as the Robert Clements/ACE Scholar. Julia presented herself in a confident and well-spoken manner; she’s a creative thinker and enthusiastic about embracing new challenges. Julia exemplifies the qualities that we look for in a Robert Clements/ACE Scholar.”Since the inception of the Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship 16 years ago, the ACE Foundation — Bermuda has supported 24 Bermudian students with their studies through the Robert Clements/ACE scholarship and other discretionary awards. The fully-funded four-year scholarship is open to Bermudians studying at accredited overseas universities. Students can study for an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science or other disciplines related to the insurance industry including accounting, law and economics. The scholarship allows Bermudian students the opportunity to study for a degree without financial worry. As part of this scholarship, students are offered employment opportunities during the holidays to provide them with relevant work experience. A condition of the scholarship is that recipients must be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies to pursue their career.Twenty-year-old Isaac James won the 2012 ACE/Bermuda College Education Award where he will received $15,000 a year for two years to pursue university studies overseas. Mr James graduated from the Bermuda College in May with an Associate Degree in Science. In September he will commence a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Science at the University of Leeds in the UK. Mr James’s goal is to become a general pathologist and return to Bermuda to pursue a career in the medical field. At Bermuda College, Mr James’s achievements were recognised on the Vice Presidents List for Outstanding Academic Performance.Samantha Froud, chief administration officer, Bermuda Group, and member of the ACE Bermuda College Education Award selection committee said: “The selection committee was extremely impressed with the calibre of the candidates we interviewed this year and the diversity of opportunities they are pursuing. They were all passionate, determined and focused on their goals. Isaac has already shown his commitment to pursue a career in the medical field and ACE is delighted to help him achieve that goal.”The ACE/Bermuda College Education Award was launched in 2008 as one component of a partnership formed between ACE and the Bermuda College. Since inception, five Bermudian students have benefited from the Education Award. The goal of the partnership is to provide students with exposure to international business and prepare them for the workplace by helping them understand the connection between their studies and their final place of work.
