House fire in Pembroke
A mattress fire at a Pembroke home caused about $20,000 worth of damage yesterday evening.
The Paynter family stood last night outside of their home grateful that no one was hurt in the blaze.
Most of the damage to the home was the result of heat and smoke.
Bermuda Fire Service Fire Prevention divisional officer Melvin Outerbridge was on the scene.
He said: ?The damage to the mattress and other areas was caused when firefighters were trying to bring the mattress out of the building.
Mr. Outerbridge said there was also damage to a piano, walls and ceilings.
Richard Paynter said that he did not know how the fire started. ?I was in the kitchen and my daughter said she smelled smoke,? said Mr. Paynter.
?I tried to put it out, but then I got my daughter to dial 911 and the Fire Department came.
?Thankfully no one was hurt.?
Two fire vehicles, one from Hamilton and the other from Port Royal Fire Stations, and ten firefighters responded to the fire, which happened at about 6.30 p.m., on North Shore Road, Pembroke, near to the Berkeley Road.

Two cycles were also completely destroyed by fire last night outside of the Canadian Hotel.
Bermuda Fire spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said that the bikes will be taken from Reid Street, Hamilton, to Police Headquarters for closer inspection today.
?The call came in from the Police and the cycles, one Suzuki and one Yamaha, were completely destroyed when we arrived,? he said.
?It is safe to assume that they were burning for awhile.?
The incident was reported at 8.43 p.m. and one hose reel was used to extinguish the blaze.
The matter is considered a possible arson and will be investigated.
