On the local links he plays every Saturday with the Bermuda Junior Golf Association (BJGA) and practices at St. George's golf course at least five times a week.

The 16-year-old has won three of the four major junior tournaments on the Island during the past four years -- the Glidden Bowl, the Fecchio Cup and the Bermuda Junior Amateur Match Play Championship. Only the Atlantic International Junior Golf championship has eluded him, although he has won his age group at the event.

Spurling successfully defended his title at the Tournament of Champions in Alliance, Ohio, shooting a 79 and 75 over two rounds and won by one shot when the final round was cancelled due to poor weather.

"The first day I didn't play too sharp but the second day I concentrated more and came home with a comforting score,'' said Spurling, "I am playing really well at the moment and when you play well your confidence builds up as well as your incentive to play the game.'' This week Spurling is testing his skills in Orlando playing in the Canadian Junior Open which is held on the courses of Walt Disney World, accompanied by local golfers Chris Garland and David James, who will also give him some stiff competition.

"I don't want to make any mental errors, I just want to walk on the course and know that I'm not going to make any stupid mistakes.'' said Spurling.

In the future, the Saltus Grammar School student wishes to attend a top golf school in the US which may ultimately lead to a career in golf.

"I would like to go to a school like Wake Forest, North Carolina or Georgia Tech,'' said Spurling.
