Goodwill set for exciting finish

Linfield National, St Charles and Ocean View will battle it out to win the Goodwill Tournament’s Junior Team Division Net prize in the final round at Mid Ocean Club today.Just two shots separates the three teams, with Linfield National and St Charles tied at the top on 27-under par following a birdie filled day at Belmont Hills yesterday.Ocean View, led by local professional Daniel Augustus, are in third on 25-under, while Waccabuc CC and Woodland GC are tied in fourth at 24-under. Although the top five will all fancy their chances of winning, all are playing at Mid Ocean today and will be looking over their shoulders nervously at the goings on at Belmont Hills.Lying in sixth place at 23-under are Longmeadow CC, the only team in the top ten who will play their final round at a course that was pillaged for every birdie going yesterday.St Charles, led by professional Cory Kartush, shot a sizzling 13-under par round of 57 and the work done by Mitch Zajac Dominic Dirisio and Oliver Plet has rocketed the team into contention.Ocean View and Linfield were no slouches in the birdie department either, with Ocean View benefitting from the local knowledge of Joe Rego, McNeil Simmons and Cleeve Trott to shoot a 12-under par 58.Linfield, led by professional John Allen, meanwhile posted a 11-under par 59 to keep themselves in contention, and Allen’s 18 stableford points took him to a three round total of 54, putting him five clear in the individual professional division going into today.Matthew Sita is second on 49 points, while Augustus and Keir Smith, the National GC of Canada B professional, are tied for third only a point further back. Smith though may well benefit from being the only one of the leaders to play at Belmont today, a course he got to know well during last week’s Gosling’s Invitational.Things are equally tight in the Ladies Team net competition with just four shots separating the top three teams. Toronto Golf Club are out on their own up front at 20-under, with Riddell’s Bay and Lambton D tied at 16-under. All three teams play Belmont today though and local knowledge good yet prove to be the deciding factor for Riddell’s quartet Susan Bond, Kathy Lloyd-Hines, Gladys Chambz and Tracy Burgess. In contrast to the other divisions the Senior Team Division is as good as over in the net race, with Lambton C only needing to hold their nerve to win. Their remarkable 12-under par 59 at Mid Ocean yesterday left them at 36-under for the tournament giving them a comfortable eight shot lead going into the final round. There will be added incentive for Matthew Yustin, the Lambton C professional, as he is only four points behind Scott Spence in the race for the senior professional title.Spence scored a brilliant 22 points at Mid Ocean yesterday leaving him at 51 for three rounds. Yustin, meanwhile, bagged 14 and with both playing at Belmont today the race is still wide open.In the Ladies professional division Wendy Shackelton has a three point lead with one round to play, with Ann Carroll just behind her on 33 points and Susan Bond slightly further back on 29.
