Strong start for Canadian Doig
Frequent visitor Ian Doig leads the overall field after day one of the Bermuda Open at Port Royal. The Canadian battled blustery conditions, slick greens and the flu to card a two-over-par 73 to cling to a one-shot lead over nearest rivals Eric West and Claude Grenier after 18 holes.A further shot back in third is American Christopher Baryla.Defending Bermuda Open champ Daniel Augustus shot a six -over par 77 that included two birdies, four bogeys and a quadruple bogey at the par four 15th to grab a share of fifth place on the leader board.Former Port Royal head pro West got his tournament off to a decent start with a three-over-par 74 that included two birdies and five bogeys. He was one-under-par after nine holes but lost momentum coming in with four consecutive bogeys at 13, 14, 15 and 16 and another at the par five, 18th.Leader Doig is a multiple Gosling’s Invitational winner and the reigning Bacardi Par 3 champ but has yet to inscribe his name on the Bermuda Open trophy. His roller coaster opening round, that included three birdies and five bogeys, would not have done his chances of a maiden Open title any real harm as he coped best with fast greens and strong winds, particularly on the more exposed back nine.Doig got his round off to a flyer after rolling in a birdie at the par five second hole. But his fortunes quickly took a turn for the worse with bogeys at the third, seventh and eighth holes that left him at two over par at the turn. The veteran pro managed to get back to even par after rattling in birdies at the par four 12th and 14th holes. But the momentum was quickly lost with back-to-back bogeys at the par four 15th and par three 16th.More frustration awaited Doig at 17 where he failed to convert a six foot birdie putt and had to be content with a par instead.“It was very, very challenging,” he said. “I played mostly well but had a few slip ups during the middle part of the round and struggled a little bit but was able to salvage some pars and birdies during that stretch.“Unfortunately I had three putts so if I can take the three putts away it would’ve been a pretty stellar round. I hit some shots that were a little loose but overall I’m pleased.”Pre-tournament favourites Joe Horowitz, Bill Walsh and Brian McCaan also found the conditions tough.Horowitz shot a six-over-par 77, Walsh came in at eight shots over par while past Bermuda Open champ McCann carded a nine over-par-80 that included a quadruple bogey at the par five, seventh hole and double bogeys at the par four second and 12th holes.Port Royal head pro and past Open winner Dwayne Pearman carded a seven-over-par 78 along with former European Senior Tour player Delroy Cambridge.Pearman’s round included one birdie, a double bogey at seven and six bogeys.“I had a mixed bag and sprinkled it around a bit,” Pearman said. “I didn’t hit the ball as good as I should but hopefully it will get better.”Local Scott Barnett shot a eight-over-par 79 to carve out a seven shot lead in the amateur field over nearest rival Steven Head who entered the clubhouse at 15 shots over par.Ernest Koury, Leroy Robinson and Neil Higgins are presently tied for third after carding identical rounds of 16-over-par 87.
