Letter leak a `military offence', says Regiment
The Bermuda Regiment will be conducting an internal investigation to discover who leaked a copy of a confidential letter, a senior officer revealed yesterday.
Senior British loan service officer Major D.C. Napier told The Royal Gazette the leak of confidential documents was considered a "military offence''.
It was reported in yesterday's The Royal Gazette that Maj. Napier of the Royal Anglian Regiment, wrote a letter to an officer in the UK accusing the Opposition of playing politics with the Bermuda Regiment.
The letter, brought to public attention by Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety Shadow Minister Alex Scott, blamed the Opposition for using Regiment racial issues to attack the Government.
When contacted yesterday, Maj. Napier said the letter was probably a draft, and denied the letter was an official document sent on behalf of the Regiment.
"This was a personal letter to a friend who had helped the Regiment considerably,'' he said.
Maj. Napier said he was worried about how a classified Regiment document had gotten into public hands and said there would be an internal investigation to expose the culprit.
Premier Pamela Gordon said Government had no prior knowledge about the existence of the letter.
Ms Gordon said she planned to speak with the Governor about the matter, stating: "Politics has no place in Regimental affairs -- period.'' Both Deputy Governor Peter Willis and Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety Minister Maxwell Burgess were on vacation and unavailable for comment.
