August 2: Sources come forward claiming that the Bermuda Police Service is running low on funds and would need additional money to maintain operations.August 3: Chief Justice Richard Ground orders the sale of gambling ship Niobe Corinthian in order to pay its crew overdue wages and repatriation costs.August 4: Security Minister Wayne Perinchief swears that he will find money to fund Bermuda Police Service.August 6: The body of 19-year-old Jahmeiko Perkins is discovered in a ditch near Parsons Lane in Devonshire. Police initially considered foul play as a possible cause of his death but later determined he died following a road traffic collision.August 8: A fire at HWP destroys the company’s Body and Paint Centre and causes an enormous pillar of black smoke that covered the St John’s area. No injuries were reported, but the damages were estimated to run into the millions.August 10: Scores of Customs officers quit Bermuda Public Services Union (BPSU), calling for pay parity with police.August 11: The Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) launches an overtime ban at the Hamilton docks after failing to reach an agreement with Stevedoring Services over “non-productive time”.August 11: The BIU demanded the reinstatement of suspended bus driver Jennifer Harvey, who refused to submit to a drug test following an accident.August 15: Kevin Antario Brown, son of former Premier Ewart Brown, is found guilty of sexually assaulting nine women in his Los Angeles clinic under the guise of breast and pelvic exams.August 17: Bus drivers strike, ending service just before 5pm after discussions between the Department of Public Transportation (DPT) and the BIU broke down.August 17: City of Hamilton workers issue a 21-day strike notice over the firing of two workers.August 19: Bus drivers return to work as the BIU and the DPT bring the matter into arbitration.August 22: BPSU vice president Jason Hayward warns of “epic demonstrations” should the Berkeley Institute board of governors choose to go ahead with a proposal which would half the support staff at the school.August 23: Sri Lankan accountant Chandima Arachchige is charged with defrauding her insurance company of $68,419 by seeking reimbursement for surgeries which never took place. She later pleads guilty to the offences and is sentenced to 16 months in prison.August 24: Kofi Dill, 32, is sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for handling a gun linked to four shootings.August 30: The Sunshine League announced plans to shut down its children’s home after Government decided against taking over the facility.
