Dandy Town 5 Flanagan’s Onions 2Four goals from Angelo Simmons propelled Dandy Town to a hard fought victory over Flanagan’s Onions at St John’s Field yesterday.Simmons struck two goals either side of half-time to lift the defending Digicel Premier Divisions champions to within one point of league leaders PHC.Hornets were three goals up by the interval with a Damon Ming rebound giving them an early lead after Onions goalkeeper Stephen Gould had parried Rico Wells’ powerful drive.Onions, the surprise league leaders before this weekend, fell further behind when Simmons breached the offside trap before rounding Gould and tapping into an empty net. With Onions looking strangely lethargic and lacking in fight, Hornets seemed capable of scoring at will and it was no surprise when Simmons added his second to leave the visitors shellshocked at half-time.During the interval Keston Lewis, the Onions captain, had a few choice words for his team-mates who remained pitchside rather than return to the dressing room. And whatever the former PHC striker said seemed to do the trick with the visitors appearing far hungrier during the second period, reducing the deficit when substitute Kevin Ronaldson teed up Lewis to finish.Ronaldson’s height and extra physicality was causing Hornets’ backline plenty of problems with the rangy striker going close when he volleyed straight at keeper Treadwell Gibbons Jr from a floated free kick by Lewis.A keeping error from Gibbons then afforded Lewis a free run on goal with the Trinidadian making no mistake to hand Onions hope of staging an unlikely comeback.Bristling with confidence, Lewis tried his luck with a long range effort that somehow sneaked under the body of the outstretched Gibbons, striking the post before bouncing across the goal-line and into the keeper’s grateful arms.Lewis also went close with an acrobatic volley but just when it seemed as though Onions were on the verge of drawing level, Hornets extended their cushion when Simmons grabbed his hat-trick.The Bermuda international twisted and turned his way past two defenders near the byline before pulling the ball back onto his right foot and blasting home into the roof of the net.Fabian Frankson had a shot cleared off the line late on before Simmons completed the scoring with a neat finish from close range.Hornets coach Jomar Wilkinson admitted Town “took their foot off the pedal” in the second period was encouraged by his side’s attacking brio.“I was very pleased with our first half display; we’re totally in control and caused their defence a lot of problems,” he said. “But the after the break we took our foot off the pedal and started making mistakes in midfield which let them back in.”Wilkinsons added: “Angelo’s (Simmons) finishing was superb today; he always seems to get himself in position to score.”Dandy Town: T Gibbons Jr, K Wade, A Lowe, D Ming, A Gibbons, F Frankson, D Butterfield T Wilson, 80), A Simmons, R Wells (B Minors, 76), D DarrellSubstitutes not used: J Stowe, A Rocker, T WebbGoals: Ming, 5, Simmons, 36, 43, 78, 76, 85Yellow cards: GibbonsFlanagan’s Onions: S Gould, M Laws, R Matthews (A Kelly, 76), J Donnolly, S Butler, L Osborne, S Lister, B Amoro (K Ronaldson, 45), G Thomason, K Lewis, P Robey (R Cumbers, 45)Substitutes not used: D O’Sullivan, K SzmierekGoals: Lewis:Yellow cards: A KellyReferee: E HolmesMan of the match: Simmons (Hornets)
