Gunman kills Pembroke man in barber's chair
Witnesses recounted how they “sat stunned and in shock” as a gunman walked into a barbershop on Saturday and gunned down a 31-year-old Pembroke man. The murder, committed in broad daylight is being touted as “a gang ordered hit” on a man who fled to the UK “in fear for his own safety”.Speaking on the condition of anonymity one man said “the victim was in the barber's chair” when the shooting occurred, and “everybody was told by the gunman 'not to move'.”Meanwhile, another mother is left numb as she faces the prospects of burying her only son.A police investigation is now underway into the fatal shooting at Jason's Barber Shop on North Shore Road in Pembroke around 5.20pm on Saturday.A sole female officer was stationed at the crime scene yesterday as police continue to gather forensic evidence.Family members, relatives and friends streamed into the family homestead on St Monica's Mission Road yesterday where the atmosphere was somewhat surreal. The victim's mother, one of his two sisters and an uncle spoke with The Royal Gazette on the condition that their names not be used until after the police notify all his next of kin.His mother said: “I prefer it that way, I'm still numb right now and faced with making funeral plans for my only son.”She did not hear the tragic news from police she said. “A long time family friend came rushing in to tell me, it's still kind of sinking in.“We all went to the hospital, but I couldn't bring myself to go look on him, his father and another relative identified the body for the police,” she said.Still visibly shaken, clutching family photos, his sister confirmed “her brother leaves three children behind, a set of twin boys and a baby girl”.She also verified that her brother left Bermuda for six months “to live in England because of all the madness going on around here”.“Even when he was in Bermuda, he was confined to the house, he was forced to limit his movements. But he so desperately missed his children and decided to return home just before Christmas to be with them,” she said.“The boys are coping with the news as best they could, but their mother is not doing well at all,” she added. When asked how she's coping with the loss of her younger brother, she just shook her head. There was a resounding air of sadness and disgust outside the family homestead at what most described as “senseless killings”.One of the victim's uncles said: “Its time for the elders in this country to get honest with the reality of the social disparities in this country.“People get all shocked when something like this happens, when they know the realities of young black men living in Bermuda. These tit for tat shootings won't stop until we get honest with the systematic societal ills in Bermuda.“Why should the youth care about each other when they live in a system that doesn't care about them,” he added. When asked if she knew that her son's photograph was being sent around the country via instant messaging and posted on Facebook, the victim's mother “shook her head” and asked for proof. When shown, she said: “That's a beautiful picture of him, we'll know more about the funeral arrangements on Monday,” and broke down in tears being comforted by her daughter.Sources told this newspaper that there were “least five male customers in the barbershop at the time of the incident, all adults and no young children with one barber inside”.“The gunman just walked in he was all covered up from head to toe, the victim tried to jump out of the seat,” said one man.“But the gunman said 'nobody move' and then told the victim 'don't run' before firing five shots with a semi automatic gun. The victim was shot three times in the head, and twice in the chest,” he added.“The gunman just turned and walked away, he just jumped on the bike of another man waiting outside, and left.“Everyone just sat there in shock, nobody even had a chance to move; the victim didn't have a chance to say anything, it was a wrap,” he added. The Serious Crime Unit is now looking to speak with anyone who was in the vicinity of North Shore Road, Pembroke from 5.05pm and 5.20pm on Saturday, June 23.In particular, detectives would like to speak with anyone that may have seen two males on a motorcycle fleeing the area of Jason's Barber Shop during this time frame.Anyone with any information regarding this matter is encouraged to contact Det Ch Insp Nicholas Pedro at the Serious Crime Unit directly on 247-1340 or contact the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.Meanwhile, Premier Paula Cox has called for “calm and restraint” following this latest fatal shooting. “This tragedy can only mean sorrow for another family in this community and our first thoughts must be for them.“I encourage calm and restraint in the wake of this mindless act and urge the community to unite in its support of the family, the police and each other,” said Ms Cox, who's concerns were echoed by National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief.“We have seen in these last few months how important witnesses and community involvement can be to solving crime. I urge anyone with information that might assist the police investigation to come forward,” he said. Both expressed their condolences to the victim's family. The Premier also called on Sunday worshippers to “remember those affected by this tragedy during church services yesterday, and “encourage those who can assist the police to do so”.Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier also urged anyone with information to contact police and he sent out condolences to the victim's family on behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance.“Our prayers are with you,” he said, and he “urged anyone who witnessed this appalling to step forward to help out”.Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield confirmed the “two men” involved arrived at the scene of the crime “on a motorcycle wearing full-face helmets”.The suspects “headed west” after the shooting. The police Serious Crime Unit will be holding a press conference on this most recent murder, the second gun murder in Bermuda this year later today.
