Double disappointment for top seed Devlin

Top seed Gretchen Devlin found herself on the wrong end of two upsets during Saturday?s finals of the 73rd BLTC Invitational Tennis Championships at Coral Beach Club as she came up empty handed in the Ladies? 45 and 55 Doubles finals after being favoured in both.

Returning to the tournament for the first time in five years and boasting a ?new? hip, New Yorker Devlin and partner Gill Butterfield were beaten by fourth seeds Maureen O?Berg and Faith Bascome 6-4, 6-2 in the 55 Doubles final.

And in the 45 Doubles she lost 6-2, 6-2 with Nanny Vanneck to second seeds Butterfield and O?Berg.

While Devlin, with a replaced hip, lost in her only two finals, fellow American Janet Greene, who had her appendix taken out less than a month ago, ended up winning the Century Mixed Doubles with Bermudian Earl Leader without hitting a ball ? at least not in the final.

Greene and Leader defeated Kitty Flathers and Dick Mount 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-final on Saturday morning, and were then scheduled to face Ron Groff and O?Berg, who had already taken two titles.

But during her second win, O?Berg felt a ?twitch? in her right shoulder and decided not to play another match.

In the meantime, Butterfield rebounded from one final defeat to win two others, the second coming when she and Mike Curry took the Open Mixed Doubles crown with an exciting come-from-behind victory over Heidi and Graham Boyle 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

This victory gave Butterfield a total of four titles. She won two on Friday and two on Saturday before jetting off that evening to London.

In what were expected to be the two highlight matches of the final day, neither reached their anticipated heights as James Collieson, the men?s top seed, roared from 3-5 down in the second set, having taken the first set against former number one Michael Way 6-0, to win 7-5.

Way, returning to competitive play for the first time in more than a year, showed signs of his former brilliance, but lacked match fitness.

?There were times that I knew exactly what I had to do, but my body just wouldn?t cooperate,? mused a tired Way.

In the Men?s Open Doubles the showdown between top seeds Way and Mike Curry and second seeds David Jenkins and Mark Cordeiro fizzled out as Way and Curry played near flawless tennis to take the title easily 6-2, 6-2.

Possibly the best match of the day came in the Ladies? Open singles final when top seed and heavy favourite Kelly Holland had to battle from a set down and a break in the final set to defeat the much improved second seed Jo Tucker 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

?I just made too many errors out there today,? said Holland. ?Jo played extremely well but the longer the match went on the less effective she became. It was a good match.?

In other action George Lynch took the Men?s 65 singles title when he defeated Herb Bascome 6-0, 6-2 and Tracey Berrell captured the Ladies? Open singles consolation title.

While the BLTC tournament came to an end on Saturday, the Coral Beach Invitational just got started and will continue throughout this week with many of the same players participating. All matches in the tournament were rained out yesterday.
