Doubles pair dethrone King

yesterday, proving that King Van Nostrand wasn't invincible as the clinches the men's 55 doubles crown in the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Invitational at Coral Beach.

Until the final, Van Nostrand, internationally ranked in the top 10 among players 65 and older, had swept everything in front of him and although and fellow American partner James Poster played well, Mount and Monte were not to be denied with a 6-4 6-3.

Earlier, New Yorker Van Nostrand had captured the men's 55 singles crown with a straight sets victory over Ted Hoehn. Van Nostrand's wife, Yvone, captured the ladies' 50 singles title with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Julie Lunn.

In the ladies' 50 doubles final, Gill Butterfield and Nanny Vanneck staved off three match points before rebounding to defeat Gretchen Devlin and Daphne Whitman 4-6 7-6 6-3.

"It was unbelievable,'' said Butterfield afterwards. "They played well, but we just refused to give up and kept fighting for every ball.'' Vanneck had earlier joined Earl Leader to defeat Margie Gottsho and Vidor Lunoe in the century mixed doubles and will face Nancy Drake and Ted Hoehn, winners over Nina Alami and Dick Mount.

In an all-Bermudian men's doubles open semi-final, the second-ranked team of Brian and Michael Way defeated Alex Anderson and Stuart Smith 6-4 6-2 to set up a highly anticipated final against top seeds Ricky Mallory and Mark Cordeiro today.

Mallory will also contest the men's singles open final, where he is also top seed, against Greg Frigerio.

The ladies' open doubles pits Jill Finnigan and Gill Butterfield against Kelly Holland and Tara Lambert, before Lambert teams up with Mallory to tak on Finnegan and Cordeiro in the mixed doubles open final.
