A torrent of talent
The dictionary defines ?talent? as ?a special aptitude or faculty?, and ?explosion? as a ?sudden outbreak of feelings?. Put them together and what do you get?
An event packed with Bermudian singers, musicians, dancers and poets presenting a diverse programme with something for everyone.
The date is November 10, the venue is City Hall Theatre, curtain time is 7.30 p.m., and the presenter is Marcelle Clamens Vocal Studio.
In what has become a popular annual event, founder Mrs. Clamens will once again showcase the talents of her vocal students, along with student and professional dancers, musicians and seasoned performers whose names are familiar to all.
Participating vocal students, who range in age from ten to adult, will sing a range of material, from opera to R&B. They are: Sharon Smith, Christina Lewis, Tsilala Brock Graham-Haynes, Makeila Astwood, Desta (Zion) Wilson, Kwame Harris, Jozelle Escolastica, Khalilah Smith, and Letitia Kelly.
Guest artists will include: Anointed Generation (the New Testament Church of God?s youth choir); the Bermuda National Youth Jazz Ensemble, the Bermuda School of Russian Ballet, Ricky Spence?s Salsa Dancers, United Dance Productions, as well as Aaron Daniels (saxophone), vocalist Desta (Zion) Wilson, (vocalist), and dynamic violinist Taylor Rankin.
?This year we are including more guest artists than ever,? Mrs. Clamens notes. ?Most of them, being professionals, will give the concert a more interesting flavour for everyone. We find that entertainers are looking for a place to share their talents on stage, so that is why we started to widen the programme.?
Which is not to say that the voice teacher is not also excited about the range of talent among her vocal students ? she is.
Indeed, soprano Khalilah Smith is being billed as ?Bermuda?s most versatile vocal artist,? while Tsilala Graham-Haynes is seen as showing special promise.
Ms Smith, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Philadelphia?s University of the Arts, sings with the Plus Four band at the Elbow Beach hotel, and had a lead role in ?Tony and Tina?s Wedding?, has been studying with Mrs. Clamens for three years ? an experience she says has ?opened up a whole new world with regard to my vocal technique?.
?It really has enabled me to grow beyond what I learned during my four-year degree programme, and given me a lot more know-how in handling my voice. I have learned a lot, and I am still learning, but I feel more like a professional than I did before.?
Her selections will include music theatre, jazz, and R&B.
Miss Graham-Haynes, a senior year student at Saltus, began studying ?basic opera? with Mrs. Clamens in 2002, but is also branching out into R&B and doing well.
?I am only 13 so I still have time to grow,? the teenager notes in declining to name the genre of her preference.
This will be her third appearance in a Clamens Vocal Studio concert, and she will sing two pieces, one R&B and one operatic.
Miss Graham-Haynes wants to pursue a career as a singer and dancer, and plans to enter an overseas arts school once her high school education is completed. She has been a dedicated dance student for many years.
Poetry will be presented by Joy Barnum, who is perhaps best known as a singer, and also Laurel Monkman.
In attendance will be Tishauna Raynor, the reigning Miss Teen Bermuda Islands, who will present scholarships to two of Mrs. Clamens? students.
Hosting the event will be Dwayne and Wayne Caines, and there will also be a live band.
Reprising the programme, Mrs. Clamens says there will be ?something for every taste?.
?It will have all kinds of things. When it comes to voice there will be R&B, calypso, reggae, rap and opera.
?The Russian Ballet School will give the event a classical flavour, while the Salsa Dancers will present a totally different flavour.
?We know the public is looking for good entertainment, and that is what my husband and I want to give them each year. It will be will be a first class event, with first rate Bermudian artists, and I am very proud of that.
?I am also very grateful to sponsors Bacardi International, Belco and the MarketPlace for their generous support.?
Tickets ($25) are available from the Christian Bookstore and the Music Box. The price includes complimentary refreshments.
Part proceeds will go towards the development of new talent.
