A community centre considered the “best kept secret in Bermuda” will open its doors to hundreds of people this weekend for its first anniversary celebration.Sandys 360, the brainchild of the Sandys Secondary Middle School board of trustees, was born out of a need for positive youth programmes and community development in the west end.Melvyn Bassett, the managing director, said it “started as a vision in the hearts and minds of the trustees”.He continued: “It is the result of many years of hard work, sleepless hours combined with true grit and determination.“Over the years we have worked with the community, government, local and international companies to have the vision realized.”Sandys 360 will celebrate its first year of operations with a series of community-based activities starting on Friday. They will be hosting a 24-hour swim-a-thon, 5K walk/run, Community Wellness Day, and many other events, in an effort to raise $250,000 for its youth development programmes.Speaking to the Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday Dr Bassett said the centre boasted the Island's first indoor, heated 25-meter pool and an NBA-sized gymnasium. He was confident that all who passed through the doors would return again and said: “It has been said that Sandys 360 is the best kept secret in Bermuda.“I believe that after the week of activities and the number of people we anticipate coming through our doors that will no longer be the case.“It is my expectation that once people come and participate in any of our activities they will sign up and become lifetime members.”The centre provides a full range of educational, recreational, fitness, health and aquatics programmes for people of all ages.It aims to create healthy and positive young people, adults, and families and to address some of the social issues impacting the West End.For more information and to see a full listing of celebration events go to www.sandys360.bm.
