Youth and experience the key for St.George's

Though they may lack Cup Match experience, St. George's Cricket Club officials will have no qualms about giving debuts to a number of talented Colts this year and are confident that whoever takes to the field will give the eastenders the victory they desire.

Among the list of new faces fighting to gain a place with the challengers are Flatts' right-hand bat James Celestine, Devonshire Rec's wicketkeeper Ricardo Brangman, Cleveland left-arm seamer Harry Rawat and St. George's young bat Orande Bascome, recently voted Bermuda's most valuable player during the Youth World Cup tournament in Toronto. Bascome is the son of Herbie Bascome, the long-serving medium pacer who will be challenging to retain his spot again.

"We're happy with the names we have come up with for the big finale at Wellington Oval on Saturday," said chairman of selectors Lewis Foggo ahead of Saturday's final trial match. "Whoever is finally chosen, we are certain that they will help to form a winning side, one that we are confident will be far stronger than the team we took to Somerset last year."

Fans are being urged to come out and support the players in the important fixture, the game getting underway at 10 a.m. with players being asked to report to Wellington Oval by 9 a.m.

The match-up has Charlie Marshall's President's XI meeting the Vice President's XI skippered by Gregg Foggo.

Medium pacer Gary Brangman is the only person missing from the teams who played in last year's game. He is opting to give the contest a miss this time around altogether.

"When people look at this pool of players I know they will see the vast talent from which we have to name a team," said Foggo. "We definitely will have a stronger team this time around. It may be touchy picking from so many good players, but we will aim to come up with a true winner, that's for sure."

While top all-rounder Lionel Cann played well in one Premier Division game recently following a road accident in June that sidelined him for several weeks, St. George's intend to seek proof of his fitness prior to Saturday and his progress will again be monitored closely during the finale.

"At this stage we are confident that Lionel will be ready, reports are that he had no problems in the one game that he has played to date and we feel that he will be up for the challenge," said Foggo.

Both teams will be training at Wellington Oval at 6 p.m. today.

The teams are as follows:

President's XI: Charlie Marshall (capt), Clay Smith, James Cellestine, Mackie Crane, Ricardo Brangman, Delyone Borden, Eugene Foggo, Lionel Cann, Harry Rawat, Troy Hall, Clarkie Trott.

Vice President's XI: Gregg Foggo (capt), Herbie Bascome, Glenn Blakeney, Chris Foggo, Travis Smith, Peter Philpott, Wilbur Burt, O.J.Pitcher, Mark Ray, Detroy Smith, Orande Bascome. Res for both teams. are Kameron Fox, Jade Foggo, Jalani Collington, Allan Douglas Jr., Kyle Hodsoll.

Both squads are asked to be at Wellington Oval by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Those wishing more information should contact Lewis Foggo at the club on 297-0374.
