Former Cup match cricketer Lloyd Raynor dies
The local cricket community is mourning the death of former Southampton Rangers and Somerset Cup Match all-rounder Lloyd Raynor.Raynor died at King Edward Hospital on Tuesday night from cancer, family sources confirmed. He was 75.During his heyday the late cricketer made a name for himself as a middle order batsman and medium pace bowler.He is the first batsman to score a century at the old PHC Field in Warwick and Southampton Oval.Raynor also scored the fastest half century in the Western Counties in the 1960s which he achieved in just 15 minutes at the crease.“He was one of the best onside batsmen of his era,” said Raynor’s brother, former Rangers and St George’s Cup Match star Lee Raynor. “He was in the class of Neville Roberts and Sheldon Furbert who were the best onside batsmen on the Island at that time.“Lloyd was a team player who always encouraged his teammates and was a nice person to be around in the dressing room.”Raynor’s other brother, Reggie, added: “He was a great all rounder in his own right and played Cup Match for Somerset. He could bring 40 runs in no time at all whenever the team was in trouble. He was a very aggressive player who was well known for his cover drive which was his signature shot. He was known to many as the cover drive specialist.”The late Raynor made three appearances in Cup Match between 1963 and 1965. He compiled 124 runs with a high score of 21 and an average of 20.67 during six visits to the crease.He was one of several family members from the Raynor clan involved in Cup Match at both ends of the Island during the 1960s.“Lloyd knew and understood the game,” said ex-Devonshire and Somerset Cup Match batsman Gladstone (Sad) Brown. “He was a very good player who preferred to stay in the background and let others shine around him in a Rangers team that had so many stars.“He was a good player and certainly one of the better players of his era. He was a quite and unassuming individual who always stayed in the background.”Raynor is also the brother of late Rangers and Somerset Cup Match star Sheridan Raynor and father of former Rangers and Somerset Cup Match fast bowler Randy Raynor and ex- Rangers cricketers and footballers Wayne and Lyndon Raynor. He is also the father of ex-Somerset Bridge cricketer Denzil Dill.
