assigned to design the 30,000 square foot building of Lines Overseas Management on the corner of Reid and Burnaby Streets in Hamilton.

Mr. Yuhasz explained that the 10 million-dollar project created challenges.

"The primary focus was providing a first class office environment encompassing the latest communication technology within a small building site in a historically sensitive urban corner location in downtown Hamilton,'' he said.

The design required a response to the existing street fabric in scale, detail and texture, while satisfying the client's requirements for prominent exposure and a conservative institutional presence.

Mr. Yuhasz developed the initial design and from start to finish the project took about two and one half years. As with significant architectural projects of this size and duration, Mr. Yuhasz led the architectural team which included Glenn Yelland, architectural technologist and Simon Hodson, architect.

He complimented D & J Construction Company and the many project consultants.

When asked specifically what his role entailed Mr. Yuhasz said: "My responsibilities were the conceptual and schematic design, design development, consultant coordination and client liaison. My major contribution to the LOM project was overseeing every facet.'' He feels the five-story building was a huge success for his firm and for LOM.

"It is a high profile building located in a busy financial area with a lot of pedestrians. Everything is high tech. The client wanted a strong, conservative secure image and this is reflected in the overall design.'' The towering beige building, adorned with Verde granite, features fully computerised management systems, security and access control with computerised fire alarms.

The stainless steel entrance doors are similar to those of Tiffany's in New York and Toronto and lead into a spacious, impressive, new age lobby.

"I derived the most satisfaction from the project by deriving a concept out of thin air and then designing that idea onto paper.

Many architectural drawings were rendered, models made. Then it all became a physical reality. And it was exciting to finish the project,'' he concluded.

Mr. Yuhasz, a Canadian, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Architecture. He was educated at the University of Western Ontario, the Ryerson college and the University of British Columbia.

He has been a practising architect since 1981 and his experience encompasses an impressive volume of architectural projects in the full spectrum of building topologies.

In Vancouver, London and Bermuda he has worked with leading firms in design, production and management.

He believes that an original concept requires consistency through to completion within a team framework.
