Bermuda's squad at the recent 10th World Cup in Switzerland enjoyed their best ever showing with the men placing 27th out of 40 countries and the women 17th

The pairs team of Jimmy Pratt and Vernon Daniels advanced to the third round while Gregor McQueen in the singles also went through to that stage giving Bermuda additional team points. Terry Cartwright reached the third round among the women to help lift the Bermuda women to mid-table.

In the men's event, Bermuda faced Uganda first and won 9-3, marking the first time the Island had won a team event in the World Cup. The men then faced a tough Finland team and lost 9-2 before going down 9-3 to Northern Ireland.

In their next group match Bermuda enjoyed their best performance against a strong England team, losing 9-3 but earning the distinction of being the only team to get three points from England in the early stages of the tournament.

Wales accomplished that in the final against England who swept the board with all the major trophies, the team events in both men and women, men's doubles, women's doubles and men's and women's singles.

KARATE MAT Bermuda Karate Institute founder, Skipper Ingham, his wife Kristina and Chuck Merriman, coach of the US karate team at the last Pan-Am Games, will be conducting the karate competition at the International Sports Games to be hosted by Bermuda's Department of Tourism next April.

Several top martial artists from the US, Canada and England have already accepted invitations to officiate at the event including Don Warrener, head of the Canadian Karate Organisation and organiser of the third WKO world championships to be held in Ontario next May.

EQUESTRIANISM RAH Several of Bermuda's young riders found the course and the height of the fences too tough when the FEI International Children's Show Jumping competition took place at the National Equestrian Centre at Vesey Street over the weekend.

The riders, who had to be 14-years-old or under, were divided into classes with Gemma Morrison on Excalibur winning Category A and Rayman Butterfield on Badger Bay topping Category B. Their results over the two days of competition will be compared with riders from the US, Canada, Barbados, Jamaica, US Virgin Islands and the Bahamas who have all competed over the similar courses.

CROSS COUNTRY CC A course at Hog Bay Park in Somerset, used for the first time last year, will be the venue this Saturday as both the senior and junior cross country series continue.

Both races begin at 9.00 a.m.
