A proud Bermudian who’s got the island’s best interests at heart
Sure they look good in pictures, but what else do the contestants of the upcoming Miss Bermuda 2014 pageant have to offer?
The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section is looking to find out just that over the next few weeks. We’ve asked the seven beautiful ladies a series of questions with the hope of finding out a little more about their goals and aspirations — and why they hope to become the next Miss Bermuda.
The contestants — Lillian Lightbourn, Khianda Pearman-Watson, Cami Bean-Caines, L Carmela Robinson, Fredrika Hill, Indigo Palacio and Siairah Minors — will be taking the stage at the Fairmont Southampton for the beauty pageant on Sunday, July 6.
This week we profile Cami Bean-Caines, representing Warwick.
Ask Miss Bean-Caines what makes her stand out from the other Miss Bermuda hopefuls and she’ll tell you it’s her personality and the way she carries herself.
Confidence certainly exudes from the 22-year-old whenever she hits the stage as recording artist Cami-Cam.
But she said people might be surprised to learn that she’s actually quite a shy person in real life.
“Even though I’m an entertainer and love to be on stage, at times I’m an introvert,” Miss Bean-Caines said. “People might also be surprised to learn that I make award-winning glass candy and I’m an excellent cook.”
Miss Bean-Caines was encouraged by other people to sign up for this year’s pageant.
As a performer she often gets the chance to meet and inspire people, but hopes the pageant will give her a larger platform to do that and become an even better representative for Bermuda.
“So far the process has been very beneficial,” she said. “I’ve learned different things that I can use in my everyday life such as team building, public speaking and self discipline.
“The biggest challenge I’ve come against is not being able to eat all my favourite snacks, and having to have a daily exercise routine.”
But she admitted the rewards have made it worth it. Not only has she been able to soak up knowledge from guest instructors at pageant practices, she also has the opportunity to represent the island on the world stage if she becomes Miss Bermuda 2014.
“I want to become Miss Bermuda because I’m a proud Bermudian who has Bermuda’s best interests at heart,” she said.
“I feel it will help enhance my music career, allowing me to show diversity while representing my island locally and internationally.”
Miss Bean-Caines studied hospitality management at Bermuda College and is currently a front desk and concierge agent at The Reefs Hotel and Club.
She said she enjoys what she does because it allows her to interact with people.
Although there are many people who inspire her, she said she is motivated by the people of Bermuda and seeing their strength of character, laughter, and kindness, which has made her into the woman she is.
Condoleezza Rice is another role model to her “because the way she carries and presents herself on the world stage is simply inspiring”.
Miss Bean-Caines said in the future she plans to further her career in business management, become an international recording artist and open up her own record label company in Bermuda.
“If I’m titled Miss Bermuda 2014 my first goal would be to visit the summer camps and schools to entertain, and give inspiration to the children and young adults,” she added.
