face to face with the police officer who saved his life last night.

David Swain, a maintenance contractor, was rescued from the tank by P.c. David Kerr in February.

And last night the two men were reunited at a ceremony, held by the Bermuda Bravery Award Association at Government House.

P.c. Kerr was one of eight heroes honoured by the Association in its annual ceremony.

After picking up his award, P.c. Kerr said: "I feel very honoured. At the time I suppose I realised that I was putting my life in danger but I just thought that there were two guys in there and it doesn't take long to drown.

"I'm very pleased to accept the award, but I'm more pleased that those two guys survived.'' Mr. Swain, who was rescued along with his friend Kevin Bridgewater, said: "Greater love hath no man than he who is prepared to lay his life down for a friend -- or in this case two strangers.

Presenting the awards was Governor Thorold Masefield. He said: "Those of you close to the recipients will already know what fine people they are. I am sure you will be very impressed when you hear of their heroic actions.'' The other seven heroes honoured at the ceremony were: Jerry Correia, for performing first aid on a heart attack victim.

Lifeguard David Cote, for rescuing a drowning girl.

Eugene Eversley, for tackling an armed robber.

Anna Hodgson, for reviving a woman found face down in a pool.

Dal Jones, for fighting a fire at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Edward Stovell, for reviving a drowning woman.

Jacob Trott, who underwent surgery to remove a kidney which he donated to his seriously ill step-daughter in need of a transplant.
