Ponies brave weather

Jason Lopes on the outside in pink looks to overtake in the stakes race for 2-year-olds in Boxing Day harness racing.

Dismal weather conditions did not deter entrants at the Driving Horse and Pony Club's annual Boxing Day meet at the National Equestrian Centre.

Race one in the stakes was for the two-year-olds with Real Shamrock driven and owned by Aaron Sims lined up on the rail, Maja Nightrain owned by Inwood stables and driven by owner Michael DeCosta in the middle and on the outside Killer's Legacy, owned and driven by Joseph Vieira.

The race started off shakily for both Real Shamrock and Maja Nightrain - both of them coming off their feet. This gave Killer's Legacy, and the vociferous Vieira, the opportunity to come around and take the rail. But DeCosta did a good job to get back in the race tying Vieira at the finish line in a time of 1.12.

Race two in the two-year olds saw Killer's Legacy ride to victory, much to the delight of Vieira's supporters.

In the three-year-old race there were six ponies entered.

LA Pocket Rocket, owned and driven by 17-year-old Jason Lopes, surprised everyone to take the honours with Shady's Liberty placing second and LA Winning Ticket owned and driven by Bill Booth third.

The other surprise of the day was GV Colonel Spence winning the four-year-old race in times that almost surpassed the existing track record.

The horse, owned by Inwood Stables and driven by Nick DeCosta posted two times of 1:05.2. Grand Shady, another Inwood pony, holds the track record of 1:05 flat.

Rocket Ride, owned and driven by Bobby DeGraff, placed second. It was not really a good day for Rocket Ride who could do no better than post 1:08 on the day.

Goldmate, with Eddie Roque in the sulky, picked up a solid third to the delight of owner Joe Correia. These were Goldmate's fastest times and moved her up a time bar.

There were 16 other races on the day. One of the highlights saw featured driver Colin Mello record two solid wins with his mare LL Dane in good times of 1:09 and 1:10.

Harness racing resumes on New Year's Day at 12 p.m. at Vesey Street.
