Stage set for thrilling races

No, it won't be a new dance step creating all the commotion, although the grace and style will be in evidence.

Instead, those venturing to the area of Vesey Street will be treated to an extravaganza of flying hoofs and cracking whips as the annual Boxing Day Stake Races occupy centre stage at the Vesey Street Equestrian Centre.

A plethora of exciting match-ups are on tap, with the two-year-old, three-year-old and four-year-old `money' events being showcased.

Three ponies are entered in each of the aforementioned divisions, with Showtime , Shamrock Formal Attire and Miss Tuffer Road listed as the combatants.

Showtime is a brown and white stallion owned by Ellie Wilson and driven by Kenny Mills. He is the son of Grand Marshall -- also owned by Wilson -- which similarly is a regular participant at the track.

Eddie Roque will pilot Shamrock Formal Attire , which is owned by Joe Roque.

And like Showtime , Formal Attire is the son of a local racer, his father being current track record holder Shamrock Tuxedo , which clocked one minute, six seconds last season.

The other offering among the two-year-olds is Bermuda bred Miss Tuffer Road of the Inwood Stables and driven by Nicholas DeCosta. Her mother, Tuffs Little Missy also races at Vesey Street.

Entering as favourite in the three-year-old section will be Just Cruising , a brown stallion owned by Skeleton rest Stables and driven by Jarizhino Cooper.

Just Cruising has the fastest time of all those entered, having previously clocked 1:02 on the half mile. He is the grandson of Hoe Down Don, another regular racer.

Stepping up in class is another Wilson owned commodity, Grand Willy , who won a two-year-old stake race a year ago and will be looking to repeat that feat among the older group while being driven by John Flood.

New to the local game is Shamrock Marla , a brown and white mare owned by Andy Stoneham and driven by Derek Seymour. Marla has a lifetime best of 1:10 over a 5/16 track.

Only one entry has so far been revealed for the four-year-old event, with Grand Shady of Inwood Stables the only pony listed.

Michael DeCosta is the driver and has a best time of 1:08.4 on Bermuda soil.

Grand Shady is the son of Shamrock Shady , the world track record holder at 59 seconds on a mile track and co-champion over the quarter-mile at 1:04.4.

However, aside from the above mentioned special races there remain several others to capture the fancy of racing enthusiasts, with more than 20 events planned.
