Crystal Ball sets fastest time

David Lopes recorded three wins during last weekend's harness racing at Vesey Street

GV Crystal Ball posted the season’s fastest time with driver Mark Richardson at the helm during weekend harness racing at Bermuda Equestrian Centre.

Eddie Roque’s stallion ran a 1:04/1 in the Free for All to better the previous mark (1:04/2) — held by Philip Correia’s stud Cherokee Superman — by one fifth of a second.

Correia, meanwhile, endured mixed fortunes at the racetrack.

He was a double heat winner with Cameron Harris’ stallion, Brona’s Mike, and gelding, Nite Dreamer.

However, his day ended on a low note after his stud, Cherokee Superman, injured a leg in the opening heat of the Free for All and was scratched from the second.

“Cherokee Superman had a little hiccup and it was more my fault,” Correia admitted. “I made an adjustment to the harness that didn’t work out so great looking for more speed.

“He grazed a leg but it didn’t slow him down. But I scratched him (from the second Free for All heat) as a precaution.”

Correia did rival driver Harris a big favour.

His victory in the 1:05-1:06 time bar with Brona’s Mike moved Harris’ stallion up a time bar to the Free for All.

“Cameron was away and I was just test driving it and took it up a time bar,” Correia explained. “Brona’s Mike ran really well.”

The evergreen David Lopes recorded the most wins on the day.

The 71-year old driver chalked up three wins with gelding Pastor Paul (1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar) and mare LA Erma Time (1:10/4-1:12/4 time bar) to cap a memorable day of racing.

Zinho Cooper and Casey Truran were the remaining multiple heat winners.

Cooper posted two wins in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar with stallion GV Smokem that did just that to the competition.

Truran swept both heats in the 1:13 & Slower time bar with stallion Inwood’s Generation respectively.
