Tyler Smith scored a double as Upstarts overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Spartans 4-2 in the Men’s Division hockey action on the weekend.

Spartans raced away to a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Byron Rencken in the seventh minute and Dylan Pacheco seven minutes later.

Down two goals, Upstarts refused to hit the panic button and responded in emphatic fashion when Julian Wheddon got his side on the scoresheet in the 24th minute before Smith levelled the match two minutes into the second half.

Smith gave Upstarts the lead for the first time in the 50th minute and the points were safe when Donnie Moniz scored 11 minutes from time.

Bluebirds used four different scorers in their 4-0 win over Canaries in the Women’s B division.

Neat stickwork between Deborah Sagus, Kris Soares and Jo-Ann Smith ended with Soares finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute.

The lead was doubled two minutes into the second half by Paula Few, who rounded off another well-worked team goal.

It was 3-0 a minute later, courtesy of Nikki Murray-Mason, who was found with a through-ball from Sagus. Smith completed the scoring in the 47th minute, beating the Canaries goalkeeper at her right-hand post.
