Vallis 5K organisers aim to ride wave of euphoria

The organisers of the Butterfield and Vallis 5K will look to build on the excitement of the Bermuda Marathon Weekend when local runners will hit the roads again next month.

Organisers hope entries get close to last year’s record of 700 runners. The event is promoted and organised by Butterfield and Vallis, assisted on race day by the Bermuda Union of Teachers, and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association.

“With an amazing Bermuda Marathon Race Weekend behind us, the 5K is the next event on the local running calendar and we are hoping to get close to the record participants for this event,” said Terri Durrant, of Butterfield and Vallis.

The race, which starts outside of the Reading Clinic and finishes at Butterfield and Vallis on Woodlands Road, will be timed by Bermuda Timing System. One change is the ban on strollers being used in the competitive part of this event, a decision made by the BNAA. Non-competitive walkers are still allowed to use strollers.

The event starts at 9am with the Primary and Middle School boys and girls running the 2.7km route. The Senior School students and adults will run the 5km route at 9.30am. Walkers will start right behind the runners. Proceeds from the event will go towards sending young athletes to the CUT Biennial Student Athletic Championships.

The main draw prizes are two pedal bikes from Winners’ Edge. The first 800 participants will receive a T-shirt, goodie bag and a medal upon finishing. Entry forms are available at the Sportseller and at both Butterfield and Vallis locations. Participants can enter online at www.racedayworld.com. Entry forms can also be downloaded on www.bv.bm.

Paper entries close January 29 at 4.45pm, while online entries close at 5pm on January 31. Late registration and number pick-up is February 1, between 10am and 2pm at Butterfield and Vallis. There is no late registration on race day.
